PUMA Spring 2020 Golf Apparel – The Year of the Cat

0

Leave it to PUMA to brighten your day with a new collection of golf apparel for Spring 2020. Ladies will fall in love with the PWRSHAPE Solid Woven Skirt. It’s their basic skirt for the season and looks great whether you paired with a solid or patterned top. For 2020, it’s woven instead of knit and features a curved waistband to give ladies a more flattering and functional fit and the gripper tape helps keep everything in place. The front and back pockets will hold all of the golf paraphernalia you’ve got, and the attached inner briefs add confidence. Better yet, there’s still a Cat logo on the left hem. The PWRSHAPE Solid Woven Skirt is available in 16″ and 18″ and in 9 great colors. Sizes range from 2XS – 2XL.

Golf clubs can be picky when it comes to appropriate attire, so don’t be surprised when PUMA’s new Flirt Mesh Tanktop turns some heads, and not for the reason you may be hoping.  It is lightweight and moisture-wicking with a Cat logo on the left hip. It comes in 5 great colors including Rose Water, Rapture Rose, Dark Denim, Bright White and is perfect for the range or running errands around town.  The Flirt Mesh Tanktop is available in sizes XS – 2XL.

PUMA’s Ombre Sleeveless Polo is double knit, lightweight, comfortable, and with DRYCELL technology, it wicks moisture away from your body quickly and effectively. It features a traditional ombre print with a stripe pattern, contrasting collar and a Cat logo on the left hip. It’s available in 9 versatile colors and can be paired with many different outfits. The Ombre Sleeveless Polo is available in sizes XS – 2XL.

There’s not anything feminine looking when it comes to rain gear. That is until you see PUMA’s new Zephyr Jacket; it is perfect for those windy, drizzly days on course.  This woven jacket features WINDCELL technology that helps protect against windy conditions and keep you dry and warm. It’s full of feminine elements such as cute, gathered pockets with contrasting colors and a contrasting zipper track. There’s also a hoodie trimmed with the same contrasting color and a snap on the back to secure the hood to the jacket. With its great looks, the Zephyr Jacket can quickly become a staple in your golf bag. It’s available in sizes XS- 2XL and in Pale Pink, PUMA Black, Rosewater, and Peacoat.

There’s no argument that Puma’s Jackpot 5 Pocket Pant is their best pant yet. The 5 Pocket was created with technical fabrics that wick moisture away from the skin to help keep you dry and comfortable during your entire round. But this year, there’s even more, such as a new, lighter mesh stretch waistband with silicone gripper tape that will keep your shirt tucked in. The floral print on the pocketbags is a nice added touch as well and the 5-pocket construction is in a class all its own. The Jackpot 5 Pocket Pant is available in waist sizes 28 – 40 and in 9 colors. Better get more than one!

The Grandview Crew has become my favorite sweatshirt, whether I’m playing golf or not. This stylish and comfortable pullover is perfect for the office, the golf course, or anywhere in between. The Grandview has a classic crew silhouette with camo print details on the collar and the elbow patches. This pullover a soft French terry fleece fabric and features a ribbed hem and cuff, and a left-chest pocket. There’s a Cat logo on the back of the neck. The Grandview Golf Crew is available in sizes S – 3XL and in several colors including Deep Lichen Green, Dark Denim and High Rise.

Although the Bahamas is better known for its beaches and sea life, it’s also home to the PGA TOUR’s Hero World Challenge.  The new Slow Play Polo is part of PUMA’s new Saltwater Collection and features a fun, repeating golfing turtle pattern that is sure to turn some heads on the tee. It’s sewn from PUMA’s Fusion Yarn Flex fabric, a blend of performance and natural fibers that offers the perfect mix of all-day comfort and on-course performance. Moisture-wicking keeps you dry and the Cat logo on the left sleeve identifies your brand. The Slow Play Polo is available in sizes S – 3XL and in either Blue Bell or Bright White. I wear it just to get a reaction!

The ALTERKNIT fabric is a textured fabric that showcases PUMA’s expressive style through functionally breathable elements. Their Digi Camo Polo is sewn from ALTERKNIT and also features DRYCELL technology that draws sweat away from your skin to help keep you dry and comfortable. The polo’s unique geometric camo pattern is in vogue and the comfort of this new textured fabric will amaze you. The Digi Camo Polo is available in sizes S – 3XL and in Dark Denim, Quiet Shade, and Bright White

Another great looking, high-performance polo from PUMA is the Palms Shirt which is part of the Island Time Collection and features an all-over palm leaves print.  The moisture-wicking fabric keeps you comfortable, cool and dry through all 18. The full-button-up design was designed to be worn untucked, and the four-way stretch fabric lets you glide through your golf swing. The Palms Shirt is available in sizes S – 3XL. PUMA offers a wide variety of solid color shorts that will pair well with anything from the Island Times Collection.

This is just a small sample of what PUMA has for guys and gals this golf season. To see more, visit their website at www.cobragolf.com/pumagolf/.

The Breakers Palm Beach – A Whole New Rees Jones Golfing Experience

0

The Breakers Resort in Palm Beach, Florida has a history that dates back to the late 1890s. As industry tycoons and wealthy socialites began flocking to the pristine shores of Palm Beach Henry M. Flagler, one of America’s great industrialists and founder of The Breakers saw the opportunity to purchase land and build grand estate hotels. He first built The Royal Poinciana, followed two years later by The Breakers. Twice the latter was destroyed by fire – in 1903 and 1925 – only to reemerge more luxurious each time.

The Breakers reopened in 1926 after the second fire and was modeled after the magnificent Villa Medici in Rome. Building it required that 74 artisans be brought in from Italy to complete the intricate paintings, detailed across the ceilings of the 200-foot-long main lobby and first-floor public rooms, both of which remain on display today.

Each successive year word spread and the resort’s reputation grew, ushering in aristocrats and glitterati to Palm Beach year-round. At any given time you could find the likes of the Rockefellers, Vanderbilts, Astors, Andrew Carnegie, and J.P. Morgan, not to mention US presidents and European nobility.

Much of the Breakers remains the same now as it was then, at least architecturally. You’ll still find unbridled luxury, the glamour, and aroma of the ocean out back and service that is second to none. In a world that is so interconnected, it’s nice to visit a hotel that lets you step back and takes care of your every want and desire. All with a price, of course.

As you enter the front door of the hotel after valeting your car, you’re quickly struck with the charm and opulence of the lobby. Look up at the ceilings as you tour the main floor and you can’t help but be in awe of the paintings and adornments you see.

Check into your room and let the enchantment begin. The Breakers offers guest rooms and suites that are all well-appointed. We were treated to a Junior Suite with an Oceanfront view. In the room was a large king-size bed, a couch with coffee tables and two balconies overlooking the water. The rooms are tastefully decorated and leave you wanting for nothing; simply pick up the phone and dial “0” if you can think of something you need and don’t have.

Dining is a special event all its own. On the property, there are eight dining venues; nine if you count Flagler Steakhouse across the street in the golf clubhouse. For my money, it’s the best restaurant on the property. After ordering a round of cocktails, start your meal off with a Seafood Tower, a collection of shrimp, crab claws, oysters and crab legs. Then it’s on to the main course; you can’t go wrong with any of their signature steaks, including the Bone-in Filet Mignon. For accompaniments, try something different, like Gorgonzola Potato Tots or Caramelized Brussels Sprouts. Top it off with an after-dinner drink and a piece of their award-winning Key Lime Pie and you’ll think you’ve died and gone to heaven, albeit a few pounds heavier!

If seafood is more to your liking, you have to try the Seafood Bar. The bar itself is a giant aquarium, with the Atlantic Ocean serving as a backdrop. For drinks, they offer a wide variety of house-crafted beverages like a Pineapple-Infused Martini or a Flirtini. For appetizers you can’t beat their New England Clam Chowder or Blue Crab Nachos and the Broccoli and Kale Salad is outstanding.  When it comes to the main course, Pecan Crusted Grouper is one of their specialties and the Blue Crab Fried Rice and Lobster Cole Slaw are truly delicious and unique. If you didn’t try the Key Lime Pie at Flagler’s you have a second chance at The Seafood Bar.

The Circle is a wonderful dining experience and home to what is probably the most extravagant breakfast buffet in the area. The room itself is quite impressive with soaring 30-foot frescoed ceilings and eight oval murals depicting Renaissance landscapes. As for breakfast, The Circle offers an artfully crafted buffet of hot and cold selections including fresh fruit and pastries to made-to-order crepes and omelets. If you’re not all that hungry, you can order off of their à la carte menu which features traditional favorites.  I haven’t experienced it but I hear the Sunday Brunch is a culinary experience not to be missed.

There’s plenty to do at the Breakers once your food has settled. There are four pools and of course the beach, but there is also a world-class fitness center, spa, tennis, and shopping. Oh, and did I mention the two Rees Jones-designed golf courses: Breakers West, about 20 minutes to the property and the newly redesigned Ocean Course, right there at the hotel.

The Ocean Course at the Breakers as arguably the oldest golf course in Florida and was originally designed by Alexander Findlay in 1897. After closing for several months in 2018, the course reopened late in the year, fresh off a facelift from world-renowned architect Rees Jones. His makeover got its inspiration from The Breakers’ philosophy of balancing preservation and modernization. The renovation included a lot of reimaging and reshaping of fairways and greens the addition and maturation of several water hazards and the implementation of a new salt-tolerant grass, something that is sorely needed given the course’s proximity to saltwater. According to Jones, “Every hole has a different little twist and a different set of details.” At only 5,778 yards from the back tees, a course rating of 67.8 and a slope of 126, it’s certainly not going to overwhelm better golfers but as tight as it is, it’s certainly going to test your mettle. Four sets of tees produce yardages that anyone can handle.

The Breakers Rees Jones Course is located about 10 miles – west – of the main resort and can best be described as a massive land of green grass dotted with blue ponds. It is the more modern of the two courses and is the antithesis of The Ocean Course. From the back tees, the Rees Jones Course plays 7,104 yards (74.8/146); about 2 par 5s and a par 3 shorter than its sister course. Large fairways give way to some long water carries and well-undulated TifEagle Bermuda greens creating a memorable and challenging golf experience. Shaping the ball is a necessity out here if you want to score well. The 9th hole is particularly memorable. It’s a long dogleg left with water all down the left side tee to green. It requires a long carry over water to a small landing area with a deep menacing fairway bunker on the right. From there you’ll play your approach shot over the same lake into a green surrounded with sand and water and a lot of undulation in it. Although it’s handicapped number 5, it will test your accuracy and shotmaking ability.

There’s obviously a lot to do at The Breakers in Palm Beach. For more information or to book your next Breakers vacation, visit them online at www.thebreakers.com.

Bald Head Island – An Island Golf Experience Second to None

0

Bald Head Island is by no means an easy place to get to; it’s not something you’re going to stumble across by accident, yet it is a special place for a variety of reasons. It’s not far from Wilmington, NC – about a 20-minute ferry ride from Southport, NC actually – so it’s rather secluded. Cars are prohibited on the island, you’ll see yours again when you return via ferry.

Once you get to the island the Island Tram will take you and your possessions to your destination, usually a vacation rental. Everything is dog and cat friendly, so long as they are on a leash or in a crate.

The majority of visitors are here for vacation, usually in one of the privately-owned vacation rentals. Many are here for the beaches; Bald Head Island boasts 14 miles of beaches, which I’ll bet is pretty much the circumference of the island! Then there’s Bald Head Lighthouse, the oldest one still standing in North Carolina. You may recognize it from the movie Weekend at Bernie’s. A visit to the Smith Island (the island’s original name) Museum will fill you in on the history of the island, dating back to the Revolutionary War. Some, like me, are here for the golf course at the Bald Head Island Club; guest membership is included in some rentals. Word of warning: If you are renting a home and plan on playing golf, be sure that a guest golf membership is included. It’s the only way that you will get on the course short of begging a lonely member!

The golf course is an incredible work of art and to me is one of George Cobb’s best works; a pretty bold statement considering he is the designer of the Par 3 Course at Augusta National as well as several other prominent properties. The golf course at Bald Head Island Club opened in 1974 and underwent a major renovation under the direction of Tim Cate in 2010. Cate made the course a lot more natural-looking and more of a challenge by transforming almost 35 acres of rough into new sandy areas with native grasses. He also converted the greens to Miniverde Bermuda grass complete with a new irrigation system. Long-time members will tell you that it is now a completely different course.

From the Black tees, Bald Head Island Golf Club measures 6,832 yards with a course rating of 73.9 and a slope of 142. This alone should tell you how tough the course plays. Move up two sets to the White tees and you’ll find a more manageable distance of 6,032 yards (70.3/131) which will let you enjoy the course a lot more. For ladies, the Teal Tees measure 4,785 yards (68.9/118). Choose the tees that best match your game and you’ll have a good time.

Bald Head Island is one of the most beautiful courses I have played in the state, and that’s saying a lot! The course winds its way through a maritime forest and out onto a dune ridge that offers spectacular views of the ocean on the final few holes.

One of my most memorable holes is Number 7, a par 5 that plays 480 yards from the White Tees. As you stand on the tee you can see a flag in the distance as Robin Williams once said, “To give you hope!” Between you and that flag is a lot of sand and water. The green is significantly elevated with a deep massive bunker directly in front. Although I hit a good drive and the green was within striking distance, I opted for the safer path and left it short of the bunker and hit a solid wedge shot up on the green, leaving a good – yet unsuccessful – putt for birdie.

Number 14 is a 365-yard par 4, dogleg right that looks a lot tougher from the tee box than it really is. In reality, it’s one of the widest fairways on the course and once you find it off the tee, you’ll have a good look at the green. The green is slightly uphill and is protected on either side by bunkers, so be sure to take enough club and hit it straight.

The par 3 16th hole is considered by many to be Bald Head Island Club’s signature hole. From the back tees, you’re at one of the highest elevation points of the golf course – if not the island – with a wonderful panoramic view of the golf course and the sea. There’s water in front of the green as well as up the entire right side, so be sure to take the right club and hit it crisp!

At 404 yards from the White Tees, Number 18 is the longest par 4 on the course and a challenging finishing hole. The fairway is flanked on either side by lagoons and even though the landing area is wide, the prevailing winds can wreak havoc on an otherwise good drive. Many players will be hitting a long iron on metal into the green which is surrounded by sand and natural areas. The green slopes significantly to the right, so you may only see the front part of the green. Par is a great way to finish.

As you can imagine, both the island and the Club are well-sought venues for weddings and special events. Whether you’re looking to put together an elegant, sophisticated event, complete with a four-course catered dinner or a fun, romantic party with a twist, Bald Head Island Club’s experienced culinary team will put together a customized menu, and their dedicated staff will ensure that you and your guests have a memorable event.

Bald Head Island Club offers three categories of full-time membership: Golf, Sports, and Social. There are a limited number of new memberships available in each category but are only available with the purchase of new property or new construction. Alternatively, a membership may be available when purchasing a resale property from a current Club member who is selling their membership with the sale of their home. All Memberships are subject to application and approval.

All in all, Bald Head Island and Bald Head Island Club are worthy of consideration for your upcoming vacation. You can visit The Club online at www.bhiclub.net.

Cobra King SPEEDZONE Driver – Sneaky Long!

0

Inspiration for Cobra’s new SPEEDZONE driver comes from Formula 1 race cars. By optimizing 6 different zones on the clubhead to optimize performance, the SPEEDZONE driver lets you know what it feels like to drive at top speed!

Zone 1: CNC Milled Infinity Face. Cobra has increased the milled area on the clubface by 95%, expanding the zone where maximum ball speed is achieved.

Zone 2:  Titanium T-Bar Speed Chassis. This new feature reduces the amount of Titanium that is used and creates a stronger frame that can withstand high-speed collisions while at the same time improving feel and stability.

Zone 3: 360 Carbon Wrap Crown. SPEEDZONE’s carbon wrap crown now covers 50% of the body of the clubhead, an increase of 10 percent. This adds stiffness to the chassis and saves 25 grams of discretionary weight that can be used for other purposes high handicappers need, like increasing forgiveness.

Zone 4: Speedback Weighting. Cobra has been able to position 69 grams of mass as low as possible. This creates the most efficient transfer of energy from the clubface to the ball resulting in higher launch and lower spin.

Zone 5: Speedback Aero Shape. SPEEDZONE’s new streamlined shape with its milled perimeter leading edges generates airflow with ultimate precision and delivers maximum acceleration power.

Zone 6: High MOI Design. Just like the design of a wide-bodied car, the weight has been strategically positioned around the perimeter to improve the stability of mishits so they’ll fly longer and straighter.

As you stand at address You’ll find that the SPEEDZONE has a traditional shape, with front to back CG adjustability thanks to a movable weight. It’s the perfect driver for golfers who like to work the ball and fine-tune launch and spin without sacrificing forgiveness. Hit a few balls with your new SPEEDZONE driver and then be prepared to drive farther than usual to hit it again; this club is long and very forgiving. If you like to work the ball, it’s easy to hit a fade or draw, even with it set up in the Neutral position.

The SPEEDZONE Driver is available in two models: SPEEDZONE and SPEEDZONE EXTREME. EXTREME is geared towards higher handicaps (10 – 25) with added features such as an oversized profile, maximum forgiveness, and a mid-low spin. There’s also a 12-degree loft for those who need help getting the ball in the air off the tee. The SPPEDZONE model has an adjustable weight that lets you customize your ball flight and is geared toward 0 – 10 handicappers.

In the age of artificial intelligence invading golf club design, Cobra’s line of SPEEDZONE golf clubs features an Arccos embedded grip sensor that can be paired with the Arccos Caddie app on your mobile device. The Arccos Caddie app gives you access to golf’s richest data, helping you make smarter shotmaking decisions.

Customization is a good thing and Cobra gives you several shaft and grip options; even more if you want to spend some money. Stock shafts include the UST Helium 4, 5, MCA Tensei CK AV Blue 65, Project X HZRDUS Smoke Yellow (60g) and the Aldila Rogue Silver 60. All of the information you will ever need to make an informed decision on which shaft is right for you can be found on the Cobra Golf website. A Lamkin Crossline Connect Black grip is standard equipment.

Speaking of customization, the SPEEDZONE Driver is available in a couple of colorways: Matte Black/Yellow or Matte Black/White. The same goes for the EXTREME model. Both models retail for about $450.

The next time you’re at your favorite golf store or pro shop, pick up the new SPEEDZONE driver and head over to one of the hitting bays, preferably with a launch monitor. Hit a few balls and compare the distance and dispersion to what you’re currently hitting. I think you’ll be surprised.

Callaway MAVRIK Driver – Discover the Difference a Few Yards Can Make!

0

Apparently, Callaway has spent the past several years gathering information. Oh sure they’ve sold a ton of Epic, Epic Flash and Rogue drivers, you see them everywhere. And that’s where a lot of this new information has been gleaned.

It seems to have started back in 2016 when they launched Jailbreak Technology in the Great Big Bertha Epic driver. Callaway first introduced A.I last year when they rolled out the Epic Flash. This year they once again looked to their supercomputer to come up with the right formula for faster ball speed, forgiveness, and a better sound. Their newest line of A.I. engineered golf equipment is the MAVRIK and includes the full lineup of equipment: drivers, woods, hybrids, and irons. MAVRIK replaces the Rogue line which had a relatively short life span of two years; I’m not sure what that is in “club years!”

Callaway took all of the data they had amassed over the past few years to come up with the new shape and design of the MAVRIK line. By using A.I., Callaway was able to create a new Cyclone Aero shape that reduces drag and produces faster clubhead speeds. A.I. also helped Callaway design the all-new Flash Face SS20, which promotes faster ball speeds across more of the clubface area regardless of the model or loft. More about that in a minute.

The clubhead has been created from FS2S titanium, which is extremely strong and lighter than your everyday, run of the mill titanium. This optimizes speed, forgiveness, and spin rate. Two Jailbreak bars connect the sole to the T2C Triaxial Carbon Crown promoting faster ball speed, and a redistribution of weight for a higher MOI. It sounds great too!

There are a few shaft and grip options available for your new MAVRIK driver; quite a few actually if you don’t mind shelling out some extra cash. Standard shaft options include the UST Helium Black (40g class), Project X’s Evenflow Riptide in the 40/50/60g classes and the Aldila Rogue White 130 MSI in the 60/70g class. A gray Golf Pride 50g Tour Velvet Align grip comes standard but can be ordered with extra wraps to create a mid-size or jumbo grip. The Bronze/Black/White color scheme is eye-catching however if you prefer something different, I urge you to order your new driver from the Callaway website where you can customize the colorways.

Three models make up the new MAVRIK driver line. Within each model, Callaway produces different Flash Faces. MAVRIK is the standard model and will appeal to the majority of players. It offers mid-level spin and a moderate draw bias coupled with Callaway’s new Cyclone Aero shape which features a flatter crown and sweeping sole from front to back. This is designed to increase clubhead speed.

The MAVRIK Sub Zero model is aimed at the better player segment of the market. It’s Callaway’s lowest spinning driver, yet it still produces high MOI. The head is about 450cc compared to 460cc in the other two models. While it may have the smallest head, it has the most versatility in settings and adjustability including 14g and 2g weights to alter ball flight and spin rate.

MAVRIK Max is targeted at players who want a long, easy to launch, easy to hit driver. The draw bias also helps slicers be less so.  Its large footprint boasts the highest MOI and launch of all three models. If you’re a golfer who struggles with a consistent strike pattern and need help keeping the ball in the fairway, this may be your best bet.

I’ve now played several rounds with my new MAVRIK driver and two words quickly come to mind: LONG and FORGIVING. I think that’s exactly what the company wants to hear. I spent my first round fiddling with the settings; changing the loft and bias on almost every hole. By the second round, I was pretty sure I had it “dialed in.” By the third round, I started hitting straighter, longer drives than I had in years. The way the ball flies off the clubface is incredible; shots you didn’t think you got a hold of will surprise you when you chase them down. It’s also easy to shape shots. I have it set on the standard bias and hitting a draw or fade is effortless.

I played with a friend of mine recently, we have pretty much even in terms of distance. That was the pre-MAVRIK era. Post-MAVRIK I am easily twenty yards by him; ten if really gets a hold of it! My number of fairways hit off the tee has increased dramatically as well; that is if I don’t hit through them!

The Epic Flash driver was the bestselling driver of 2019. With a retail price of $500, it remains to be seen if MAVRIK can duplicate the feat. Stay tuned…!

Callaway Triple Track Ten Putter – Aim is Everything!

0

It seems that Callaway has always realized how important putting is to the game of golf. Ever since they launched their Odyssey Two-Ball putter in 2001, the company has done everything within legal, ethical and moral limits to help make putting easier.

New for this year is Callaway’s Triple Track Technology. If you’ve played any of their new golf balls with the red, white, and blue alignment aids on them, you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about. The new Triple Track putters are made to be used with these golf balls; line them up and see for yourself!

Callaway’s line of Odyssey putters are the #1 putter in Golf, the #1 putter on every major worldwide Tour, and #1 in worldwide putter wins. Odyssey was also the #1 putter at every major championship in 2019. They must be doing something right!

In fact, the new Odyssey Triple Track putters were developed specifically from Callaway’s popular golf ball line. Triple Track Technology uses the same visual technology used to land planes on aircraft carriers – Vernier Hyper Acuity. It’s as simple as find the right line, line the ball up along that line, line the putter up with the lines on the ball, make a good stroke and pick up the ball from the hole. That is after you do your happy dance!

The Triple Track technology is not the only new feature Callaway putters offer. Their innovative, multi-material Stroke Lab shaft is engineered to help improve the tempo and consistency in your stroke, producing performance that is nothing short of incredible. The multi-material shaft weighs 40g less than conventional putter shafts, allowing Callaway to redistribute the weight in the head and grip end. A rebalanced putter means better tempo and consistency, two facets necessary for a good putting game.

Lastly, Callaway’s new Microhinge Star Insert creates a firmer feel when connecting with the ball which in turn produces a sound that is music to your ears. The Microhinge Star Insert was inspired by Callaway’s White Hot Microhinge and provides the same roll characteristics.

I’ve only played a handful of rounds with my new Triple Track Ten putter but I must say I am impressed. Warming up on the practice green for the first time with it, I don’t think I missed anything within 10 feet. Being the great range player that I am, that needless to say did not carry over to the first green or any others for that matter. I do feel that it’s now just a matter of finding the right line and taking the putter straight back and straight through. In six rounds with the new Triple Track putter, I bet I’ve shaved off a couple of strokes each round.

The new Odyssey Triple Track putter combines all of Callaway’s impressive new technologies into one putter that offers exceptional alignment, consistency, and performance. The Triple Track alignment system is available on several models including the Marxman, Ten, Ten S, Double Wide, Double Wide Flow, and the ever-popular 2-Ball and 2-Ball Blade models.

Loudmouth Golf – Make Your Own Statement!

0

Are you the type of person that likes to be seen, when you’re out on the golf course? Do you want to make a statement while you’re out there? Have you got the game to back it up?

If you answered yes to these questions, then Loudmouth golf is a golf apparel company that can help you achieve your means to an end; at least with the first two. They can’t fix your swing or make you hit the ball further or sink more putts, but they can provide you with good looking functional golf apparel that will – believe you me – get you noticed.

For those of you not familiar with the company – which is hard to believe if you have ever picked up a golf club – Loudmouth Golf was founded in 2000 by Scott “Woody” Woodworth. His first design was a pair of pants with prints of few Warner Brothers cartoon characters. The apparel caught the attention of several sports personalities who ordered the pants and the rest as they say is history. In 2009, PGA TOUR professional John Daly began wearing the company’s clothing while playing on the European Tour and to this day is still the Brand Ambassador. Celebrities who have been seen sporting the brand include Alice Cooper, Bill Murray, Will Ferrell, and Dennis Rodman; no surprise there! Loudmouth has also been seen on several TV shows: Showtime’s Dexter, Disney’s Austin & Ally, Saturday Night Live, CW’s One Tree Hill and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

It’s been almost 20 years and the company still continues to put out new, eye catching fabrics that are sure to turn heads. Two of my new favorites are the Strawberry Short Game and the Time Machine. I’m not sure who names the fabrics, but they all seem relevant! I picked up a pair of Strawberry Short Game Shorts and a pair of Time Machine pants along with a Time Machine Skort for my wife, after all, happy wife, happy life!

The fabric and features for both are the same: Loudmouth’s StretchTech Poly fabric, which provides the utmost in style and comfort and wicks moisture away from your skin, keeping you cool and dry. They fit true to size, so if all your other shorts are a 34 waist, these will be too. All Loudmouth men’s shorts and pants have a two-button tabbed front closure with a zippered fly, belt loops on the waist and two front and back pockets that are deep enough to keep that lucky ball marker safe and secure. There’s an “LM” logo embroidered just above the left back pocket.

The women’s skorts are sewn from the same StretchTech fabric and have a side zip closure and spandex shorts underneath for added coverage. They offer a mid-rise fit, about 2” below the natural waistline and have a slight A-line shape which is quite flattering. Two slanted front pockets and 2 back pockets offer all the room you’ll need for your golf goodies.  There’s an “LM” logo embroidered just above the left back pocket.

Guys (and the wonderful women who sometimes do their laundry) love these shorts because they’re so easy to care for. Just machine wash on cold and hang to dry or throw them in the dryer like I do.  The fabric is wrinkle free, shrink free and fade free; what else could you ask for? Best of all, the colors are bold, bright and fun; that’s why you buy them! The Strawberry Short Game print is a quasi-paisley in pink with hints of black and white, which makes it a lot easier to pair with a solid polo. The Time Machine print may be a little harder to match up; the base colors are orange, purple and navy. They hypnotic design is truly eye catching.

We are getting ready to leave Florida, where Loudmouth seems to be socially acceptable and are heading to Crossville, Tennessee where I will either fit in or start a new trend. Wish me luck!

Reunion Resort & Golf Club – New Management Making a Difference

0

The Reunion Resort and Golf Club in Kissimmee, Florida is a beautiful 2,300-acre property that includes single-family homes, condos, and extraordinary amenities such as a water park, delicious dining options and three golf courses designed by three of the game’s greatest players: Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, and Tom Watson. Reunion is the perfect destination for family vacations, buddy golf trips, weddings, social events, and corporate meetings. Reunion Resort is a AAA Four Diamond-rated property and is just one of six resorts to receive Golf Digest’s “Best Golf Resorts in Florida” award.

Early in 2019, Kingwood International Resorts purchased the iconic Reunion Resort, previously managed by Salamander Hotels & Resorts and a mere twelve months later, changes within the resort are evident and playing conditions at all three courses have improved dramatically. I recently had the opportunity to visit the resort, sample the cuisine and play the courses. As I made my way around the courses, I spoke with several players who were familiar with some of the improvements. All commented that since Kingwood had assumed ownership of the property, course conditioning was a lot better.

Kevin Baker, Corporate Director of Golf, has been with Reunion for over 16 years serving in several different capacities including Director of Golf and General Manager. He has survived the Bobby Ginn and Salamander years and is pleased with what he sees already from the new owners. In the last year, Kingwood has invested over $1 million in enhancements to the three courses including upgrades to bunkers and landscaping around all of the green complexes. This scale of renovation has not been seen since the early days of LPGA tournaments at the resort.

The Watson Course was Tom Watson’s first Florida golf course design and is a job well done. Of the three courses, it has more of a links feel to it and what the course lacks in water hazards – there are none – it makes up for in bunkers. The Watson Course features wide, rolling fairways and fast, firm, undulating greens. There are over 120 bunkers of varying sizes, shapes and depths. A good sand game is a must if you want to score well. Common sense prevails on this course as well and the course favors a shot-maker over a long hitter. There are several memorable holes but none more so than Number 9. From the Blue tees, the hole plays 384 yards and with all of the bunkers lining the fairway. the tee shot is very intimidating. If I were naming holes, this one would be “A Day at the Beach!”

Believe it or not, the Palmer Course rates the toughest of the three courses when comparing slope and course rating. Interestingly enough, it’s also the shortest! The Palmer Course has the most elevation changes of the three courses – albeit 50 feet – and the rolling terrain that the course is built on can make for some interesting lies. Many of the greens are humongous with a tremendous amount of undulation and several with crowns and ridges. The risk/reward par 4, 7th hole plays 248 yards from the Blue tees over water and is a lot of fun, even if you don’t find the green off the tee. Palmer is a course that can be enjoyed by everyone, regardless of ability.

The Nicklaus Course is located down the road from the other two and with a new clubhouse and restaurant, it’s that much more popular. Of the three courses, the Nicklaus Course is the longest and for my money, the toughest. This parkland-style layout features elevated tee boxes and greens surrounded by beautiful – and evil – bunkers and waste areas. In all, there are more than 120 bunkers on the course and you’ll face a few forced carries but nothing outrageous. As with most Nicklaus courses, it’s the greens that make this course; they roll quick and true with a lot of subtle undulations. Depending on the hole locations, the greens can have you talking to yourself. To score well, you’ll need accuracy off the tee and the ability to think your way around the course; it’s brains over brawn!

As far as warming up before your round, both facilities have comprehensive practice facilities with full-length driving ranges, short game areas, practice bunker, and practice greens. There’s no excuse not to play your best!

Reunion Resort offers its guests a variety of accommodations options. Choose from luxury 1 – 3-bedroom villas and multi-bedroom vacation rental homes. Regardless of what you pick, you’ll have spacious living and dining areas, full kitchens, patios, and balconies. Each master suite has a king-size bed and private bathroom; living rooms and bedrooms have flat-screen TVs and DVD/CD players. Many units have washers and dryers and if you’re in a rental home you may even have your own private swimming pool, game room and possibly your own putting green! All units have complimentary high-speed wireless Internet. These aren’t your average hotel rooms!

Guests at Reunion Resort have several dining venues to choose from as well. Eleven is the resort’s signature steakhouse and sits on the 11th floor of the Reunion Grande. Eleven was remodeled recently and has an elegant feel thanks to the open dining room. Many dishes use farm-to-table ingredients paired alongside premium steak cuts and signature entrees. Be sure to try one of their award-winning steak enhancements: truffle balsamic glaze, jalapeño hoisin sauce or crab Oscar. Chef’s creations include pan-roasted scallops accented by a lobster butter sauce and a crab-crusted Florida grouper filet drizzled with citrus butter. Be sure to leave room for dessert and choose from such sweet delicacies as Brown Butter Bread Pudding with whiskey glaze and Peanut Butter Macadamia Chocolate Torte. Eleven boasts an impressive wine list and an intriguing selection of dessert martinis. After your meal, step outside on the veranda and, if you’re lucky, catch evening fireworks compliments of Walt Disney World.

Inside the new Nicklaus clubhouse  – once named The Tradition Course – you’ll find Traditions, another great Reunion Resort dining venue. Traditions offers a seasonal menu with a local flavor and a focus on farm-to-table freshness and excellent service. Ask for Mary Ellen and you’ll see what I mean! You don’t have to be a member or even a resort guest to eat at Traditions, although you can charge it to your room! They offer a breakfast menu and an all-day menu. If you’re looking for something different for breakfast try their Sunshine Smoothie, made with bananas, almond milk, orange juice, fresh strawberries, and ginger. Traditionalists will enjoy one of their heartier dishes such as a Skillet Breakfast with includes eggs, andouille sausage, caramelized onions, spinach, potatoes, and mozzarella cheese.

The lunch or dinner menus offer savory entrees such as Buttermilk Fried Chicken, Boneless Braised Short Ribs and Crusted Snapper. Or try something light and fresh like a Chef’s Artisan Salad with heirloom tomatoes and goat cheese, or a Tuna Poke Bowl with fresh tuna, arugula, couscous, edamame, and pickled ginger. Before your main course, may I suggest the Ale & Cheese Fondue with Bavarian Pretzel Bread? Craft cocktails, a signature barrel-aged bourbon program, and weekend entertainment make Traditions a gathering place for all.

The Clubhouse at Reunion is always a good choice for breakfast before your round, a quick bite as you make the turn or a mouthwatering bite to eat afterward. They feature regional American cuisine served in a casual and comfortable setting.  For breakfast, you can order off the menu or choose to eat from their breakfast buffet. For lunch or dinner, I highly recommend the burgers and Turkey Avocado sandwich.

Reunion has something for everyone; there’s a spa for mom, a water park for the kids, dining, and accommodations for all and golf for dad. Lots of golf! To book your next visit to Reunion Resort, visit them online at www.reunionresort.com.
