Old Waverly Golf Club – Nature’s Golf, Plain and Simple

0

Old Waverly is a very special country club. It’s steeped in Southern charm, after all, a Southern gentleman like founder George Bryan has a particular knack for making guests happy. Bryan is also the co-founder of the new Mossy Oak Golf Club, located across the street from Old Waverly in West Point, MS.

Since 1988, Old Waverly has been serving up a daily dose of Southern hospitality every day to members and guests of the Old Waverly Golf Club. Old Waverly was developed on the site of the historic Waverly Mansion and is regarded by many as one of the truly unique private clubs in all of the US. The club was the vision of the George and Marcia Bryan Family, who wanted to create a world-class golf and hospitality destination in the heart of the Mississippi Black Prairie.

Old Waverly is known for many things: its gracious service, five-star comfort food, home-smoked barbecue and sweet mint tea. But to golfers and members, it’s best known for its championship golf course. Over the years, many top golf publications have agreed and enshrined Old Waverly on their “Best of” lists:

  • Golfweek – #1 Residential Golf Course in MS
  • Golf Digest – #1 Golf Course in MS
  • Golf Digest’s Top-100
  • Golfweek’s Top-100

Additionally, Old Waverly hosted the 1999 U.S. Women’s Open Championship and was selected to host the 2019 US Women’s Amateur.

The golf course was designed by Jerry Pate and the late Bob Cupp and is set against the backdrop of hardwood trees, stately homes and four lakes. Old Waverly plays over 7,000 yards and delivers a golf experience like no other. The course is highlighted by holes that place a premium on accuracy and shot making as well as a host of risk/reward shots, all while navigating through some of the most scenic views the Mississippi Black Prairie has to offer. You’ll find many deep and well defined pot bunkers in the landing areas off the tee as well as greenside. Rightfully Old Waverly has emerged as the premier golf destination in the South.

Most Memorable Hole: Number 6, Par 4, 331 Yards. A sneaky little dogleg right par 4 that requires a short carry over a waste area off the tee to a defined landing area. From there, you’ll have a short pitch shot over a small pond to a wide, shallow green with a nasty little pot bunker in front of the green.

Favorite Par 3: Number 17, 170 Yards. Although the distance of this hole may not intimidate you, the water left certainly will. The pot bunker in front of the middle of the green forces you to carry the ball onto the green off the tee and a ridge through the middle of the green can make for some interesting birdie putts.

Favorite Par 4: Number 18, 385 yards. A dogleg left with water all down the left side. Your best bet off the tee is to aim at one of the fairway bunkers on the right side. Find the fairway successfully and you’ll have the best angle into an angled green protected by 8 bunkers.

Favorite Par 5: Number 9, 485 Yards. Bunkers dot the landing area of this front nine finishing hole, both in the landing area and in the rough. And not only on your tee shot, but on the layup shot as well. In all, there are no less than 13 bunkers on this hole. Selecting clubs that keep the bunkers out of play may be your best bet to leave yourself a manageable chip onto the green. The way the bunkers are set up, you’ll most likely have to carry the ball onto the putting surface which slopes back to front. Par is a good score here.

Old Waverly offers several choices of luxurious accommodations including villas, condos and single-family homes. Nine four-bedroom cottages sit on Lake Waverly provide the bulk of overnight stays. Each cottage has four separately keyed bedrooms and baths surrounding a spacious shared common living area equipped with a wet bar area, coffee station and big screen HDTV. Guests have complete access to the club and its amenities. Need something bigger? For families and large groups Old Waverly offers spacious, 2, 3- and 4-bedroom villas and condominiums that are located within close proximity of the clubhouse. Most of Old Waverly’s villas and all of the condominiums offer lovely views of the course’s pristine fairways as well as Lake Waverly.

When it comes to dining, Old Waverly has a number of options to choose from. Murphy’s is located on the lower level of the Clubhouse and is a great place to eat a casual lunch, watch the big game, play darts or just relax with friends. They also offer a limited breakfast buffet from 7:00am until 10:00am most days. Cameron’s is the perfect place to relax and celebrate the end of the day or the beginning of the evening, depending on how you look at it. Cameron’s is reminiscent of a Scottish landowner’s library with its rich warmth complemented by a wide selection of fine cigars and wines as well as your favorite libations.

In the event your tastes are a little more discerning and you desire something a little more elegant, The Magnolia Room welcomes diners with a panoramic vista of Lake Waverly and the golf course. Jackets are required for all gentlemen, as are reservations.

The English Garden at Old Waverly provides the perfect setting for afternoon tea, an outdoor cocktail party or a hearty barbecue feast. The highlight of the garden is the original smokehouse, where superb meats are prepared for even the most discriminating of tastes.

One look at Old Waverly Mansion and you’ll quickly realize that finding a more ideal venue to host the wedding of your dreams would be an arduous task. Whether you’re planning a low-key Mississippi-style event or a classic affair with more refined elegance, the team at Old Waverly has the experience to make your dreams a reality. The property features a number of ceremony locations with unsurpassed views and can accommodate either a few special friends or hundreds of guests.

The members at Old Waverly Golf Club are a diverse group and hail from towns throughout Mississippi, neighboring southern states and from various cities across the country. Some even reside full time in West Point, MS. To meet the needs of such a diverse group of members, Old Waverly has developed a comprehensive choice of membership categories designed for individuals and families of all ages and locations including:

Resident Memberships

Junior Memberships

Non-Resident Memberships

Social Memberships

Corporate Memberships

Military Memberships

Ask anyone who’s been to Old Waverly what they feel makes this a special place and you’ll hear a variety of responses. Some will tell you it’s the golf course, others will say the food and drink. Or it could be the accommodations and the clubhouse. Many will tell you it’s a combination of the above. But ask George Bryan and he has a different perspective; he’ll tell you it’s the people. Most are local Mississippians who need little instruction of how to take good care of members and the guests. Old Waverly also hires a number of students from Mississippi State University’s PGA Golf Management program. Can you think of a better place to learn the golf industry?

There are two ways to play golf at Old Waverly: become a member or play it as part of a Nature’s Golf package. When packaged together with Mossy Oak across the street, you’ve got a one-two combination that can’t be beat.

For more information on Old Wavery, Mossy Oak or a Nature’s Golf package, visit www.oldwaverly.com.

Wolf Laurel Country Club – Elevate and Escape

0

As I pulled into the parking lot at Wolf Laurel Country Club, I was met by Head Golf Professional/General Manager, Bobby Anglin. I introduced myself and we discussed the purpose of my visit and what to expect on the course. He smiled, handed me a scorecard and a booklet of local rules and Golf Pro tips. As I headed out the door, I could hear him snickering and as I headed to the first tee, I understood why!

Bobby grew up in the area; even played for and captained the Mars Hill University golf team. He has been a Class A member of the PGA of America since 2006 and General Manager at Wolf Laurel Country Club since 2013. He had a pretty good idea of how I would fare at Wolf Laurel especially after he heard about my issue with heights. Hence the amusement!

Being from Florida, mountain golf is a very different experience, especially for someone with an acute fear of heights. Driving on some of the cart paths is scary enough, let alone a high, elevated tee box. This is exemplified by Wolf Laurel Country Club’s signature par three, Number 6, with a tee to green elevation drop of over 200 feet. On the card, the hole plays 213 yards but when I used my slope adjusted rangefinder, I came up with a number south of 140 yards. Although the ride down the mountain was as challenging as the hole, the fact that I could tell my friends about the 213-yard 9-iron I hit was good compensation.

Let’s start with a little history of the Wolf Laurel community, Wolf Laurel Resort and Wolf Laurel Country Club. Wolf Laurel is a gated community of over 5,000 acres located just off I-26. The land was purchased by the Bald Mountain Development Corporation from the David Buck estate, Raleigh English and H. Lee and David McDaris. The resort is mostly surrounded by The Pisgah National Forest with 2 entrances to the Appalachian Trail. Recently, a 750-acre nature land preserve trust adjoins the property. The original development plans called for a golf course and ski slopes, all of which still exist today. Wolf Laurel derives its name from the abundance of mountain laurel that could be found in the area and for the large packs of grey wolves that roamed the area. Unfortunately – or fortunately for residents – the wolves have been extinct since the 1930’s.

Wolf Laurel Resort provides year-round recreational activities including horseback riding, tennis, heated swimming pool, hiking trails, stocked trout pond with numerous creeks, event pavilions, children’s programs, and golf in the warmer months, During the winter you’ll find eighty acres of ski slopes and tubing that are perfect for the cold weather enthusiast.

Wolf Laurel Country Club is an award-winning mountain golf course located atop one of the highest ridges in all of Western North Carolina and was designed by W.B. Lewis in 1965. This 18-hole championship mountain course overlooks Bald Mountain and winds through the Wolf Laurel Resort. It is one of the highest golf courses east of the Rockies with an average green elevation on the front nine of 4,546 feet and 4,054 feet on the back nine. All told, Wolf Laurel Country Club incorporates more than 1,000 feet of elevation change. With mature forests surrounding the course, no parallel fairways and the mountains as a backdrop, you’ll enjoy both a secluded and a challenging round of golf.

From the back tees, the course plays 6,214 yards. It may not be the longest course in the area but with a course rating of 70.2 and a slope of 132, it will provide a challenge. Ladies typically play from 4,312 yards (65.2/122). There are four sets of tees as well as a “Combo” yardage for men on the scorecard. Other than the aforementioned 6th hole, the most memorable for me was Number 8, a 366-yard hole. You start with a blind tee shot up a hill, but what you don’t know is that the green sits at the bottom of the hill you just hit up, about 115 feet below. The grounds crew leaves the fairway longer than usual on the backside of the hill, otherwise you’d be able to drive the green. Just think, a 213 yard 9-iron and a 366-yard drive, all in the same round!

Members come from all over the area to enjoy everything Wolf Laurel Country Club has to offer. The Club is located 27 miles north from Asheville, NC and only 29 miles south of the Tri-Cities – Johnson City, Bristol and Kingsport, TN.

In addition to offering fantastic golf, Wolf Laurel is also a favorite destination for nature lovers who escape to its elevation for some of the coolest temperatures in the south. It makes golfing, hiking and horseback riding much more enjoyable.

The Clubhouse at Wolf Laurel Country Club is a beehive of activity. The main dining room overlooks Big Bald Mountain, the third highest peak in the Appalachians. Step outside onto the deck and the view only gets better, with some of the most dramatic and panoramic vistas in all of North Carolina.

The lounge and dining room have recently undergone a total makeover and are the perfect place to sit back and relax after a round of golf. Wolf Laurel features a full menu during the summer and fall seasons, created by the hands of Executive Chef Jacob Pacetti. Pacetti and his talented staff create such culinary delights as Jerk Chicken Wingettes, served with a honey lime mango dipping sauce and sprinkled with tri colored diced peppers. Looking for something a little bit lighter? Try their Peach Salad; bourbon grilled peaches, crispy pancetta and bleu cheese served over an arugula and spring mix and served with a lemon and poppy seed dressing. Entrees include Tennessee Grass Fed Beef Wellington, topped with a whole grain mustard and honey cream sauce. It’s topped with shredded tobacco onions and served with rosemary and truffle au gratin potatoes and herb roasted carrots. Simply delicious.

Desserts are an exciting experience all their own. Pastry Chef Gabby Ferguson has taken everyday foods such as meatball sandwiches, tacos, even the peanut butter and jelly sandwich and reincarnated them into desserts using truffles, angel food cake and mousse. They are definitely picture worthy and taste every bit as good as they look. You can’t go wrong with anything on the Wolf Laurel menus.

You don’t need to live at Wolf Laurel to become a member of the club. As a Golf Member, you will be entitled to enjoy unlimited use of the golf facilities and privileges to reserve tee times.  There are no green fees, just a nominal cart fee.  In addition, member have full use of the Club’s dining room, lounge, social and fitness facilities. Other membership services are available including golf club storage, golf handicap service and lessons.

A Social Equity Membership entitles the member to enjoy all of the dining, lounge, social and fitness facilities the Club has to offer as well as five rounds of golf each year with the required cart and greens fees. Activities within the Club include bridge, Mah Jongg, bunco and a book club.

Wolf Laurel Country Club has a habit of making events such as family reunions, weddings, charity events, golf tournaments, and business seminars a memorable experience. The Club’s professional and friendly service coupled with great food is sure to please everyone. Whether your plans include a golf outing or tournament, reception, or a lunch or dinner business seminar, the staff strives to make each event unique and can easily customize it so that your guests will enjoy and appreciate what you’ve done.

Experience Boca West – The Top Residential Country Club in the United States

0

Boca West is a private country club community in Boca Raton, FL and is regarded by many leading magazines and industry experts as the Nation’s #1 Private Residential Country Club. Boca West encompasses over 1,400 acres of lush tropical landscaping and offers magnificent residences, including townhomes, patio homes, villas, garden apartments and single-family homes. Over 6,000 residents, including almost 3,500 families in 55 communities call Boca West home.

Golf and tennis are at the top of the list when it comes to things to do at Boca West. Architects Pete Dye, Arnold Palmer and Jim Fazio have used their architectural talents to create four distinctly different golf courses. All feature strategically placed bunkers and rolling fairways that wind their way through the natural Florida landscape. The putting greens will test your touch and can all be enjoyed by golfers of all levels and abilities.  Each course has several sets of tees, so you can always choose the yardage that best fits your game.

The 6th hole on Palmer I is one most players won’t soon forget; especially the ladies; this is their #1 handicapped hole. The fairway is a thin strip of land flanked by lakes on either side and the occasional sand trap, just to make things interesting. From the Blue tees, the hole plays 494 yards and because of the design, getting on in two is a daunting task. It will take three well played, well struck shots to reach the green in regulation. If possible, play your layup shot to the right side of the fairway. With a left pin placement, odds are that you will have to carry the water on your approach shot. A rear pin placement will bring the back two bunkers into play and make for a tough up and down. Several subtle undulations in the green can leave you shaking your head. A fun hole nonetheless!

Fazio II (Jim, not Tom) seems to be the member’s favorite course. It opened in 2005 and has since been regrassed with Paspalum fairways and roughs leading to well-undulated Tif Eagle greens. What makes this course a favorite are the waterfalls that greet players on four separate holes. The par 3, 12th hole plays 160 yards from the Blue tees and requires a straight, well struck tee shot in order to avoid the four bunkers that surround the green. The good news is that the front of the green is open, allowing you to bump and run it on if you come up short off the tee. Hit a bad shot on this hole and just gaze over at the waterfall. It seems to take all of your troubles away. Fazio II is as beautiful as it is fun to play.

Palmer III is not without its share of holes that stay in your memory bank for a while; some are fond, some not so much! Number 17 is ranked the toughest for men on the inward nine. From the Blue tees, it’s a 376 yard dogleg left. Although the length may say driver to most guys off the tee, 3-wood may be a better choice if you want to hit the same ball a second time. If you try and fly the trees to cut the dogleg, you run a strong chance of finding either a nasty little pot bunker or more likely the coquina shelled waste bunkers and trees. See that fairway bunker on the right side? Well, just beyond that is water, the same water that comes into play when you try to cut the dogleg. Push it the least bit right and you’ll be digging into your bag for another ball. If you can somehow navigate that small area between that fairway bunker and the palm trees on the left, you’ll have a mid to long iron into a green with an open front, bunkers on either side and in back. The green itself slopes gently back to front and is a lot longer than it is wide. Par is a great score here.

Dye IV is textbook Pete Dye. Lots of pot bunkers scattered throughout the layout and some Dye-abolical green complexes. The 9th hole brings all of these nuances into play. The hole plays 385 yards from the Blue tees. Waste bunkers and palm trees frame the left side and water frames the right side of the fairway, with a couple of fairway bunkers and palm trees thrown in for good measure. If a straight, 240 yard drive is in your tee shot repertoire, now is a good time to use it. That will leave about 150 yards and the best angle into a well-protected green. Anything short and left may find the little pot bunker and make par that much tougher. If I were naming holes, the par 3, 12th would be called Sand Island. Much like its more famous sister hole about 300 mile up I-95, it has a nasty little pot bunker in front of the green. From the Blue tees, it’s 160 yards to the island green, surrounded with sand instead of water. You may not lose your ball if you miss the green, but unless you’ve got a good sand game, par or better could be as tough.

The Boca West golf experience also boasts some impressive practice facilities. There’s a full-length driving range with 50 tee boxes, a four-acre short game area, and an extensive practice putting green. Inside the opulent clubhouse is a golf pro shop and individual locker rooms for men and women. Director of Golf J.R. Friend has assembled a great staff of teaching professionals with years of experience working with golfers of every level, from novices to seasoned players looking to fine tune their game. The club also hosts helpful clinics and a variety of golf tournaments throughout the year.

The tennis facilities at Boca West are incredible. With 30 Har-Tru Hydro tennis courts, a U.S. Open Cushion Court, eight Pickleball courts and a professionally staffed tennis center, you’ll have no problem finding a game.  The picturesque courts are surrounded by lush vegetation and gorgeous views of the golf courses. Looking to sharpen your game?  USPTA-certified professionals are on staff at Boca West and can help with private and group lessons, regardless of age and skill level. If added competition is what you’re after, Boca West offers eight men’s leagues and five women’s leagues at various levels and organizes dozens of singles and doubles events as well as social tennis events throughout the season.  Each league competes with various clubs throughout Palm Beach County.

After your round of golf or a few sets of tennis, loosen up with a trip to The Spa at Boca West. They will not only help you feel your best, they’ll help you look your best as well. Their complete salon will pamper and beautify you from head to toe, with a multitude of services including custom hair design, coloring, waxing, manicures and pedicures, cosmetic consultations and bridal services.

Within the confines of the Sports Center is Boca West’s sprawling free-form pool, complete with cascading waterfalls, bridges and lush tropical foliage. There’s a children’s area, an adult lap section, outdoor spas and a serene quiet area for contemplation.  Member activities range from water aerobics to lap swimming to relaxing poolside. Swimming lessons are available from certified instructors and water basketball and volleyball games have been known to pop up at any given time. If you’re looking for a quiet place to read or relax, the adults-only pool deck offers the soothing sounds of a waterfall.

Boca West features a multi-purpose fitness center and aerobics studio. Here you’ll find plenty of exercise and cardiovascular equipment, classes and personal trainers.

When it comes to dining, Boca West has something for everyone…including the kids! Boca West has several restaurants as well as a vivacious pool bar and live music and dancing at The Living Room. Perhaps the busiest restaurant during the day is Grand Central. It’s a casual sports bar with a full circular bar where patrons can get a quick bite to eat. The menu features burgers, Nathan Hot Dogs, grilled items and salads. There are also a number of “stations” that offer deli sandwiches, omelets and pizza. I chose The Deli and believe me, it was more than enough! Within the dining area you’ll find 42 TV’s and a large video wall for viewing just about every sport.

Mr. D’s is Boca West’s “19th Hole” and offers fast paced lunch dining with items such as burgers, salads and a “scoop station.” Mr. D’s is also a popular happy hour haunt for many residents.

MyPi is a casual, a la carte cafe which overlooks the Aquatics complex. MyPi features a pizza bar, burgers, salads, ribs, and other favorites. The “On the Rocks” patio is another popular nighttime venue.

Boca West has a couple of fine dining opportunities. Prime Cut is a fine dining restaurant that specializes in USDA Prime Steak and fresh seafood. Prime is located in the Golf & Activities Center and offers members a sophisticated and elevated dining experience. They feature an elaborate cocktail menu and extensive wine list. In fact, the Wine Cellar houses over 1,800 bottles from around the world.

Panache offers classic fine dining with a country club feel. Don’t be surprised if the chef has put together a lavish buffet incorporating his wood burning grill. Panache is also home to the club’s monthly dinner dances and wine nights.

Splash Bar is a pool side snack bar and features sandwiches, salads, burgers, snacks, smoothies and soft service frozen yogurt.

Golf and tennis are two sports you can play into your 80s and beyond. Just ask Frederick “Red” DeMyer, one of the members at Boca West that makes this community so special. Red is 90 years old and has only been playing golf for about 10 years. Originally from New Jersey, he moved to Boca West over 30 years, primarily for the tennis. When that game got a little too much for his aging bones to handle, he decided to give golf a try and has been humbled by the game ever since. Having recently been paralyzed from the neck down for 6 months from a blood disorder, Red is finally back playing his latest passion. Red gets around great for his age, even parred one of the holes I played with him. He had nothing but good things to say about the community, staff and other members at Boca West and would highly recommend it as one of the best active adult communities in Florida.

Boca West is a mandatory membership community, meaning when you buy a home, membership – either golf or social – is required. That isn’t really a problem because once you’re inside the security gates, there are very few reasons to leave!

Mount Mitchell Golf Club – Going Strong Since 1975

0

With a name like Mount Mitchell Golf Club and a location in the mountainous terrain of Western North Carolina, you’d expect the golf course to have a tremendous amount of elevation change. Although this is not the case, the Mount Mitchell Golf Club is a fantastic facility with wonderful views. The course is located just off the Blue Ridge Parkway, about an hour from Asheville and has remained a favorite among locals and visitors since 1975. The Mount Mitchell Golf Club opens for play in April and closes sometime during the month of November, depending on the weather. The course has received a 4 ½ star rating by Golf Digest’s “Places to Play.” Golfweek Magazine ranked Mount Mitchell Golf Club #11 in 2016 – NC “Best in State.”

The golf course is the only U.S. property designed by English golf architect Fred Hawtree. The design takes advantage of a relatively flat piece of property located near the bottom of the mountain and is surrounded on three sides by the Pisgah National Forest. It is Bentgrass from tee to green with no blind shots and mountain views that are tough to beat. The South Toe River meanders its way throughout the course and can come into play on about 11 holes. The river also offers some of the best trout fishing in the state. No matter your skill level, you will find your time at the Mount Mitchell Golf Club challenging, fun and memorable.

Although there isn’t a whole lot of elevation change on the front nine, it’s not without its share of trouble. Many of the holes are tree lined, placing a premium n accuracy, especially off the tee. There’s a lot more movement on the back nine, starting with the short (330 yards from the White tees) par 4 10th hole, which plays uphill, followed by the short (125 yard) par 3 11th, which plays downhill and at least a half-club shorter.

The next three holes are the three toughest holes on the inward nine. The long par 5, 12th hole is the second-best hole on the course. This tree lined dogleg left requires straight tee and layup shots, followed by a precise approach shot over two front bunkers to a long narrow green. Thirteen is a 410-yard, par 4 with a slight dogleg left. Play it down the right side and avoid the fairway bunker and you’ll have the best angle in to a well-protected and deep green. This gets you ready for the toughest hole on the entire layout, a 420-yard par 4 that doglegs to the left and requires an approach shot over the South Toe River, which crosses the fairway about 100 yards shy of the green. The putting surface is protected in front on either side by sand as well. It takes two strong shots as well as a good putter to score well on this hole.

As you cross the bridge to the green on the par 3, 15th hole, look over the side and you’ll probably see several trophy-worthy trout. Fish food is available at the snack bar and when you throw a little to them, you’ll witness a feeding frenzy similar to a Best Buy sale on Black Friday. Guests and residents are welcome to purchase a fishing license and take their luck at catching one of these lunkers. Just don’t set your hopes on taking it home and fixing it for dinner; everything is catch and release. Instead, save your appetite for a savory entrée at Hawtree’s Pub.

Named in reverence of the course’s designer, Hawtree’s Pub is open Tuesday – Saturday for dinner. Chef Stuart Jensen and his staff serve up a menu that is not your typical clubhouse fare; it’s more of a full-blown, fine dining restaurant, with all kinds of steak, poultry and seafood dishes. Prime Rib is served on Friday and Saturday nights. Stuart even puts his personal touch on such dishes as his famous Taco Salad. You can dine under the stars and enjoy live entertainment on certain weekends and by request.

There’s plenty to do at Mount Mitchell Golf Club besides golf. The stream that meanders through the course has some of the best trout fishing in North Carolina. There are also hiking trails that offer some magnificent views within the Pisgah National Forest as well as horseback riding nearby. Mount Mitchell has become much more than a golf club, as can be seen by the new line of hats for sale in the pro shop, proclaiming the facility “Mt. Mitchell Golf and Fish Club.” The pro shop is well stocked with a lot of stylish golf attire and the fishing guides are a phone call away and ready and willing to help you in your fishing endeavors.

Mount Mitchell Golf Club offers some incredible stay and play packages for 2019. Two or more golfers can arrive on Sunday – Thursday, play that day, spend the night in one of Mount Mitchell’s condo rentals and play a second round the following day for $125; $139 if you want to do it over a weekend. You can add a second night in the condo for around $35 if you’re too tired or just don’t want to leave. Three-day golf and two-night packages start at $189.

If you’re looking to get away for a great golf vacation with limited interruptions, consider the Mount Mitchell Golf Resort. It’s located in a remote part of Yancey County, about an hour northeast of Asheville. The golf is spectacular and it’s one of the best courses in Western North Carolina that is available to the public.

Pine Tree Country Club – The Fastest Growing Family in Alabama

0

As far as country clubs in the Birmingham, AL, area are concerned, Pine Tree is one of the best kept secrets around. This family-oriented club offers its members a wide variety of recreational and social activities including an 18-hole, par 72 golf course, top-notch tennis facilities, fitness center and Olympic- sized swimming pool.

Pine Tree was established in 1968 as the result of combining two existing clubs: The Fairmont Club – a social and dining club and the Hillcrest Golf & Country Club – a 9-hole golf and social club. In the fall of 1970, the combined membership constructed a new clubhouse, and in 1994, Pine Tree Country Club began offering non-equity memberships. Pine Tree is still owned by a group of equity members who, in 2014, with membership and club revenue falling, turned over management of the club’s operations to Troon Management. Under the leadership and guidance of General Manager Andrew Smith, a 21-year industry veteran and Club President Alan Seigel, things have turned around considerably; in fact, membership has grown by more than 75% since Smith came on board! With the increase in membership, Pine Tree has been able to complete approximately two million dollars in renovations touching virtually every department in the operation, most notably—a comprehensive golf course bunker renovation, new tennis clubhouse, new fitness center, swimming pool resurfacing, and a major upgrade and remodeling of the clubhouse’s interior—highlighted by a totally updated banquet facility and a full re-imagining of three very popular casual dining and socializing areas.

Pine Tree Country Club is General Manager Andrew Smith’s second tour of duty with Troon (1998-2012 and now 2015-current). After a couple of stints with other golf management companies, Andrew came back to Troon to assist Pine Tree in repositioning itself and help the club reach its full potential. He’s also a Class A PGA Professional and can still get it around the course but doesn’t have a chance to play as much as he would like. Alan Seigel is Pine Tree’s Club President and was virtually raised at Pine Tree Country Club. His father was one of the founding members, and Alan has been playing these hallowed holes since the club opened. It shows too; I think he shot a 69 the day we played!

The staff at Pine Tree Country Club is very attentive to both members and guests of the club. As I arrived at the bag drop area, I was met by three staff members who immediately took my bag from the trunk and set it up on a cart. They quickly directed me to the people I was to meet and play with and the adventure was underway.

We started out by spending some time on Pine Tree’s driving range, a full-length facility that allows you to hit every club in the bag. In retrospect, I should have spent a lot more time there! You’ll also find a separate short game area and putting green. Plans are in the works to upgrade the practice facilities within the next couple of years.

Pine Tree’s 18-hole championship, par-72 golf course is the centerpiece of the club. The course is set upon 275 acres of meticulously maintained land and was originally designed by George Cobb and updated by John La Foy. The layout is both challenging and fair, with five sets of tees, and it can be enjoyed by just about anyone who can pick up a club. From the back tees, Pine Tree Country Club plays 7,036 yards with a course rating of 73.9 and a slope of 137. Most of the members play from the white (6,199/72.1/133) tees while others opt for the reds (4,763/67.2/119). The choice of five sets of tees present a suitable yardage for just about any player. The practice green and driving range are easily accessible from the clubhouse, leaving no excuse for not practicing!

Pine Tree Country Club has many memorable holes, but none more so than Number 3. It’s a narrow par 4 with water down the right side and a rolling, grass slope on the left. There’s also a fairway bunker shading the right side in the landing area for longball hitters and a few trees down the left. You’ll most likely need to take the aerial approach on to the green as a large bunker guards the front. The green has some good slope and undulation in it and can be a tricky two-putt.

If tennis is more your game, Pine Tree Country Club’s facilities are some of the finest in the city, with nine courts, 8 of which are lit and available for night play and practice. No matter your skill level, you can take advantage of programs to improve your skills and then get involved in some competition. Each summer, Pine Tree offers full and half day summer camps for kids starting at age 4 and up. Along with the tennis programs, the golf department led by Paul Whitman, PGA Director of Golf and recent winner of the Youth Player Development award for the Alabama NW-Florida PGA Section, has one of the most active junior programs in the Birmingham area. Paul and the professional staff offer programs year round for all ages and abilities.

The fitness room features some of the latest cardio and weight training equipment from Life Fitness and Cybex. After a good workout, round of golf or a few sets of tennis on a hot summer day, why not relax in Pine Tree’s Olympic-sized swimming pool? It’s the perfect place to take in the sun or swim a few laps. There’s a smaller pool adjacent to the main pool and is perfect for toddlers. Lifeguards are on duty at all times to watch both areas. Swim lessons, swim team and a lifeguard sitter service are also available throughout the summer.

When it comes to dining, Pine Tree Country Club has something for everyone, whether it’s the spacious ballroom, one of several dining Rooms or the clubs’ casual sports bar– “The Grill.” Regardless of the venue you choose, you’re sure to have a comfortable, relaxing experience. The food is outstanding, and the staff is exceptional and attentive, whether you need to follow the guidelines of a restrictive diet or just want to engage in a quiet conversation.

With one of the most beautiful banquet facilities in the area and views of the golf course and rolling mountains, Pine Tree Country Club has been a preferred setting for hosting a variety of events such as rehearsal dinners, wedding receptions, anniversary celebrations, award banquets and numerous regional, statewide, and local golf tournaments. Rooms can be set up in a variety of ways, and the culinary staff will see to it that your event is a success. Whether your guest list is five close friends or 350 guests, Pine Tree Country Club can accommodate your every need.

Now that you know everything that Pine Tree Country Club has to offer, it’s time to consider becoming a member. Pine Tree has a membership plan for everyone, whether you live in the area or not. As a Golf Member, you, your spouse and children under 23 will have full access to everything the club has to offer including full golf, tennis, pool, fitness & clubhouse privileges. Junior Memberships with the same privileges are available for those under the age of 35, while a Sports Membership gets you a reduced rate on 12 rounds of golf as well as full access to tennis, pool, fitness and the clubhouse. Not interested in sports? Social Members have full clubhouse privileges and pool access along with their spouse and children under 23. AeroTech SteelFiber Golf Shafts – Taking the Golf Industry By Storm

0

Serious golfers know technology and innovation are game-changers. Changes to golf equipment and golf balls have given way to 350 yard drives, not to mention how far the long drive players hit it. And now, AeroTech Golf’s SteelFiber Shafts are making a big splash on the PGA TOUR.

With SteelFiber, AeroTech has introduced an entirely new technology category in iron shafts. Players no longer need to decide between 100% graphite or 100% steel; SteelFiber combines the power of graphite AND the stability of steel. SteelFiber’s unique composite design lowers scores and increases player enjoyment, and SteelFiber’s performance benefits have now been embraced as custom options with every major equipment manufacturer.

At the core of the SteelFiber shaft is filament-wound carbon fiber. The filament winding process yields a seamless and incredibly uniform bending golf shaft. The high strength-to-weight ratio of carbon fiber delivers the desired stiffness and strength properties at lighter weights than steel, and the lightweight properties of graphite increase clubhead speed and promote greater distance. In addition, the vibration dampening properties of graphite reduce the risk of injury and player fatigue during the round.

The steel fiber material is produced using a bundle drawing process that utilizes multiple reductions in the diameter of stainless steel wire. Once the wire becomes thin enough, 1,000 individual wires are bundled together and placed inside an iron tube that is further reduced until each individual steel wire is 8 microns in diameter. Each 8 micron steel filament is approximately 1/10th the diameter of a human hair. Finally, 3,000 individual filaments are combined and spun onto spools.

I recently received a set of Callaway APEX 19 irons, something I’ve been after since I hit them on Demo Day in Orlando last January. I played them right out of the box for a week and then hit them on the range for another week (not the prescribed order of events but nonetheless it is what it is). I hit them well with the stock shafts but not as well as I did on the range at Demo Day. I decided it was time to change the shafts. I had a long conversation with Ray Lucas, VP of Global Sales & Business Development at AeroTech Golf Shafts. Their premier product, the SteelFiber shafts are the hottest shafts on the PGA TOUR. They’re probably the hottest product in the shaft industry right now. After discussing many things, including the benefits of living in Tennessee, we decided to outfit my new Callaway irons with the SteelFiber i110s in a regular flex. Changing from a stiff to a regular flex was a shot to my manhood, let alone my ego, but once I learned that SteelFiber shafts are more rigid than steel, going from a “S” flex to a “R” mad more sense.

The shafts were ordered, delivered and installed, just in time for a two week trip to Western North Carolina. Arriving at our first destination, I couldn’t wait to get out on the range and hit them. Unfortunately, I was running late so there would be no driving range; my first shot was a 150-yard approach shot to the green at Lake Toxaway Country Club; the ideal length a 7-iron. At least it was. I lined up the shot and took dead aim at the pin. With the new shafts, the ball had a high, arcing trajectory and was right online. Problem is that it flew the green; time to recalculate distances!

I’ve played about 15 rounds with the Apex-19/SteelFiber combination. What I’ve seen is not only a gain of 8 to 10 yards in each iron (4 – AW), but a higher, more penetrating ball flight and a tighter shot dispersion. I chose the shaft with the closest weight to my steel shafts and it seemed to be the right choice. I advise visiting your local club fitter and having them help you find the right SteelFiber shaft for your swing. The SteelFiber shafts may cost a little more than regular steel, but if you’re serious about your golf game, they’re worth every penny. Country Club of Jackson

0

The Country Club of Jackson has been around for more than 100 years. It’s a family-focused, membership-owned, private country club in the northeast part of Jackson, MS. CCJ is the host site of the PGA TOUR’s Sanderson Farms Championship.

Back in 1914, a small group of Jackson businessmen purchased 100 acres off Clinton Boulevard, five miles west of downtown Jackson. Given the travel methods of the day, five miles was a long way to travel, especially for recreational and social activities. Since the Country Club of Jackson was so far outside of town, transportation was provided for people who did not have cars.

In 1958, the Club purchased 400 acres of rolling terrain on the corner of County Line Road and Old Canton, site of the club’s current location. Since the land around the club was now at a premium, members drew straws for lots adjacent to the new clubhouse. When the doors opened in 1963, the Country Club of Jackson quickly became the hub of social activity, not only for Club members, but for the city and area surrounding it. Over the years, the Country Club of Jackson has played host to a bevy of glitterati including: Bob Hope, Bryon Nelson, Lee Trevino, Jack Nicklaus and many more.

In 1998, CCJ added a fitness center which has been expanded over the years and is now a 16,500 sq. ft. modern fitness facility that includes a full-service spa offering the ultimate inn restorative therapy.

As is the case with most private country clubs, golf is the main attraction. CCJ has 27 holes made up of three nine-hole courses; Dogwood, Azalea and Cypress. The Dogwood/Azalea combination makes up the championship course where the Sanderson Farms Golf Tournament is contested. Acclaimed golf course architect John Fought, redesigned the Championship 18 during the 2007-2008 seasons.

The Cypress Course is often referred to as the family nine; there are multiple tee boxes and the course can be played anywhere from 3,500 yards to 1,800 yards for junior golfers. Tee times are not required; just check in at the pro shop and head to the tee!

Memorable Holes

Dogwood Number 3, Par 5, 471 yards. This hole is your first real good chance at birdie. Aim your tee shot just right of the fairway bunker. From the fairway, longball hitters will have the option of going at the green in two but beware, anything over the green is a tough up and down. Choose a distance for your layup shot that will leave a comfortable shot into the green but beware of the two bunkers that guard the front.

Dogwood Number 6, Par 4, 421 yards. This is an interesting hole that plays easier the farther back you play it. from the forward tees the oak trees on the left side of this dogleg left would require a very lofted tee shot to get over or a well-played hook off the tee to get around. From the back tees, it takes a good poke to reach the dogleg, but from there the hole opens up to a large receptive green with bunkers front right and middle left. There’s a good reason why this is the number 1 handicapped hole on the course. Par is a good score here!

Dogwood Number 8: Par 4, 343 yards. If I were naming holes this would be called Creekside, because of the creek that runs down the entire left side and then crosses the fairway about 120 yards out. Many players will hit something less than driver off the tee. Play your tee shot down the right side of the fairway just short of the pot bunker. Your approach shot is uphill and plays about a half a club longer into a green that is protected by 3 deep bunkers. The left side of the green is open and could provide the best option at par or better.

Azalea Number 1: Par 3, 192 yards. Always fun to start the second nine off with a par 3. The first hole on the Azalea 9 is a long par 3 that plays slightly downhill and a lot tougher than you think. Regardless of where the pin is, play to the left middle of the green as the ball will funnel towards the back right. Since most players miss the green short, front left pin placements seem to be the toughest because the ball will not hop up onto the green. Three traps guard the green and anything long that finds the back bunker spells trouble.

Azalea Number 3: Par 4, 354 yards. Who says a hole has to be long to be challenging? The water tower in the distance is a great line for your tee shot and for most, the pond in front of the green doesn’t come into play. What tends to make this hole so challenging is the approach shot, which is one of the toughest you will find out here. The front of the green is protected by a pond and two bunkers while the back falls away from you. The middle right side of the green may be your best chance to put up a decent score.

CCJ has a very active golf membership including Men’s, Ladies and Juniors golf associations. Director of Instruction, Cory Vincent leads the Club’s junior program which is the largest in the state. CCJ offers year round weekly junior clinics for all abilities and provides multiple golf schools throughout the summer months. They are very active in the PGA Junior League summer program and the CCJ Junior Intraclub League during the Fall season usually fills up quickly. If there’s a junior golfer in the family, you’ll find a welcoming environment for both boys and girls at the Country Club of Jackson.

Each spring in late February, the Country Club of Jackson plays host to The Gator Invitational, one of the premiere junior golf events in the country. The Gator Invitational began several years ago as a high school event played between the top private and public schools in the state of Mississippi. After a decade of growth, this event is now recognized by the American Junior Golf Association with AJGA points awarded and attracts top junior golfers from all over the Southeast.

As you can see from the well-groomed lawn in front of CCJ’s clubhouse, croquet is a big deal and they take it seriously. The game is mentally demanding and is best played two and three shots ahead. There’s a certified croquet director on staff who is available for lessons, tips, and practice play.

Members at CCJ have a wide variety of dining options to choose from. Onyx is the Club’s flagship restaurant and features unique tapas style dishes that are large enough to share. The Onyx menu changes monthly and pushes the limits of CCJ’s creative culinary team. The Magnolia Grill offers family-friendly, casual dining and invites you to come as you are. During the spring you can dine outside on the terrace and watch the golf course come into full bloom. The summer comes to life with live music, Crawfish Boils and themed Sunday dinner buffets, and the fall ushers in the Sanderson Farms Championship as you watch the leaves change color. Thursday nights are reserved for the Downhome Buffet which features comfort food favorites like Fried Chicken, Collard Greens and the best club-made dessert bar you can find.

Like many clubs, the Country Club of Jackson is a popular venue for hosting charity events, tournaments, business functions, banquets and special events. Banquets and special events are held in the Club’s 15,000 square feet of interior function space which can accommodate 16 – 1200 people. the staff at The Country Club of Jackson will attend to every detail of your event in order to make it a success.

This year, the Country Club of Jackson will host the PGA TOUR’s Sanderson Farms Championship from September 16th – 22nd, 2019. For the past few years, the Sanderson Farms Championship has been held the same week as the World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions in China.

This year and for years to come, it will be a stand-alone tournament, one week after The Greenbrier Classic gets the PGA TOUR season started. It’s Mississippi’s largest professional sporting event. With the upgrade to becoming a stand-alone event, the Sanderson Farms Championship will offer 500 FedEx Cup points to the winner and will play a larger role in the season-long race for the FedEx Cup. The tournament will also have a record purse, up from $4.4 million to $6.6 million, with $1.188 million going to the winner. That’s huge because all of the proceeds go to charity. Last year, Century Club Charities, the host organization for the Sanderson Farms Championship, presented a $1.25 million gift to Friends of Children’s Hospital. This year all of the money raised will go to the Blair Batson Hospital for Children.

For more information on attending or being a volunteer at this year’s event, visit www.sandersonfarmschampionship.com. To learn more about becoming a member of the Country Club of Jackson, give them a call at 601-956-1411 or visit www.ccjackson.com.
