Treetops Golf Resort in Gaylord Michigan – Some of Northern Michigan’s Best Golf.

0

Treetops Golf Resort is probably the most recognizable golf resort in Northern Michigan.  With 81 spectacular holes of golf, over 238 hotel rooms and condos, a spa, salon and over 25,000 sq. ft. of meeting space, it’s no wonder Treetops Resort is a popular venue for business conferences, reunions and weddings. In the winter, it’s a fantastic ski resort, with 23 expertly groomed ski runs, exciting terrain and 20 kilometers of cross-country skiing and snowshoeing trails. During the summer, it’s not all about golf, although there is plenty of it.  There are plenty of other family activities include mountain biking, fly fishing, tennis, disc golf and horseback riding.

As a golf resort, Treetops Resort is not without its share of accolades from the golf world.  Golf Magazine has awarded it their Silver Medal Award as one of the finest resorts in the United States, 7-times. In 2002, Treetops was ranked #32 in America’s Top 75 Golf Resorts by Golf Digest and in June 2000, Conde Nast Traveler recognized them as one of the Top 50 International Resorts. Only Pinehurst and Pebble Beach were ranked higher for Golf Design by Conde Nast that year. Each year, Treetops has been consistently awarded at least 4 stars by Golf Digest Places to Play. Three of the industry’s top golf architects – Tom Fazio (Premier), Robert Trent Jones Sr. (Masterpiece) and Rick Smith (Signature, Tradition and Threetops) have all put their names on courses at Treetops.

The Jones Masterpiece Course is the only course located on the main resort property and was the first course built at Treetops. The Masterpiece Course was designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. and is the most scenic of the group, which is saying something. Many people believe that if there was one course that put Gaylord on the map as a golf destination, this is the one. At 147, Masterpiece has one of the highest slope ratings in all of Michigan, so it’s going to require your strict attention, but not so much that you can’t take in the beautiful scenery as you make your way around. In fact, it’s the scenery that makes the Masterpiece such a hit with the ladies. Ask any woman you see on the course what she remembers most about the course and it will most likely have nothing to do with pin placement or forced carries, it will be about the scenery, specifically the leaves changing color if the question is posed in the fall.

If you keep the ball under control and don’t try and bite off more than you can chew, you can score well here, especially on the par 5s. From the White tees, they play anywhere from 435 – 500 yards, so getting there isn’t the problem. The problem is keeping the ball in the fairway. Number 6 is a memorable par three that plays 162 yards from the Blue tees, but actually up to 4 clubs less because of the 120 ft. drop and the wind. This is the hole that put golf in Northern Michigan on the map. Practice facilities at the Jones Masterpiece Course include a grass driving range, short game area with practice bunker, and putting green. Regardless of how you play, it’s hard to not enjoy your round on the Jones Masterpiece Course.

The other three courses can be found at Treetops North, about a 7-minute drive up the road.

The Signature was the second 18-hole layout built on the resort property. It was also the first golf course design of Rick Smith who then went on to design the Tradition Course and Threetops. All three courses are located at Treetops North. Smith used insight and knowledge from his trips to Scotland and Ireland to help him shape the Signature Course, giving it the feel of some of the world’s best courses. The Signature has received several honors, including recognition by Golf Magazine as one of the Midwest’s best courses.  As with the other courses at Treetops, you’ll find rolling hills, sand traps, and elevation changes, both up and down. With all of its magnificent views, The Signature Course may be the most photographed course at the resort. It is the overwhelming favorite of both locals and visitors. At 420 yards from the Blue Tees, Number 13 is one of the most challenging holes on the entire property. It plays uphill making it even longer than the stated yardage. Favor the left side off the tee for the best angle into the green. Take at least on extra club to get there and avoid the two bunkers on the right side.

The Premier Course at Treetops Resort is the only Tom Fazio-designed golf course in the state of Michigan and is as challenging as it is forgiving. When asked which hole on the course was his favorite, Fazio, who was handpicked by Rick Smith to design The Premier Course, replied, “All of them!” The Premier is very “player-friendly” with many wide open rolling fairways, some of which are bowl-shaped, which helps correct errant tee shots. Such is the case on the par 4, 7th hole that plays 333 yards from the Blue tees. The slopes on either side of the fairway funnel the ball back to the middle. Don’t let the short length fool you; it will take 1 – 3 extra clubs to get to the green. Make sure you take enough to get there; you don’t want to be short. Water rears its ugly head on only one hole – the par 3 11th. Keep it left off the tee and the slope should bring it back to the green. Fives sets of tees offer yardages from 4,945 to 6,832 making the course playable for golfers of all levels.

Threetops: If you’re looking to take the kids to a par 3 course where they can learn the game, this isn’t that place! Threetops is the former site of the ESPN Par 3 Shootout and has challenged the likes of Nicklaus, Palmer, Mickelson, Couples and Floyd. The 7th hole is where Lee Trevino had his $1,000,000 hole-in-one. Designed by renowned teacher Rick Smith, every hole is unique, and course conditions are the same as any of the championship 18-hole courses on the property. Seven of the nine holes play downhill – some extremely downhill – and water comes into play on one hole, the 6th. From the back tees the holes play between 140 and 219 yards although the latter is straight downhill and plays more in the 155 yard range. Getting on the greens is the easy part; making a one – or in many cases a two – putt can be quite the challenge. Some of the greens are severe, there’s a lot of undulation and break that you may not see at first glance. Threetops is a must play if you’re on a golf trip to Gaylord, whether you are staying at Treetops or somewhere else. Stop by, relax and enjoy the best that God’s Country has to offer. You can get around Threetops in about 90 minutes.

Two other qualities necessary to qualify as a great golf resort are good dining options – preferably with a good assortment of adult beverages – and amicable accommodations. On either point, Treetops does not disappoint. As for dining options, Treetops offers three restaurants, all located within steps of each other: Legends on the Hill, Hunter’s Grille and the Sports Bar. Between the three, they offer over 100 craft beers and are committed to introducing guests to Michigan craft beers and wines. The food is outstanding and, in many respects, unique.  The Sports Bar serves Poutine, I’m sure to quell the appetites of their Canadian guests. Hunter’s Grille offers Irish Nachos, an appetizer that could be easily be considered a meal. Slices of crispy baked potato slices topped with corned beef, white cheddar, mozzarella, Thousand Island dressing and sour cream. Absolutely delicious.

As far as the rooms in the lodge go, I’ve never stayed in anything as large that wasn’t a suite. Rooms are equipped with a refrigerator, microwave and coffeemaker as well as a work area and large flat screen TV. Bathrooms are extra large and feature a large, walk-in shower. Also in the lodge is an indoor pool, hot tubs and a fitness center as well as the Treetops Spa. Bar 81 is located on the main floor and has a number of TVs, making it a perfect spot to relax with your favorite beverage and watch your favorite sports team after a round of golf.

Treetops is located about 5 miles east of Gaylord and only 10 minutes from I-75, making it an easy place to get to. For more information on this outstanding golf resort, visit their website at www.treetops.com.

Worthington Country Club is a big part of the Worthington community in Bonita Springs, Florida. It’s a “bundled” community meaning your membership is included with every home purchase. Worthington is dedicated to offering quality golf, distinctive service, outstanding social and recreational activities and providing its residents and members with quality lifestyle opportunities.

At Worthington Country Club, membership does in fact have its privileges.  As a Worthington member, you’re entitled to take advantage of all golf and tennis facilities, the resort style pool with full cabana service and bocce courts. There’s a lot going on outside of golf and tennis including fitness classes, Mahjong, bingo and walking to name a few. There’s also a myriad of card playing groups.

In addition to a bevy of physical activities, Worthington offers several casual and fine dining venues. Members can choose a casual dining experience poolside in the Cabana or move indoors to the Pub or Windsor Dining Room for great food, drink, and camaraderie. If you’re looking to host an intimate Private Party, check and see if Worthington’s Crown Room is available.

Over the years, Worthington has played host to the FSGA Women’s Senior Amateur, FSGA Junior Match Play, and numerous other FSGA, and South Florida Junior Events.

The Course offers 6 sets of tees from which men and women can enjoy the course, with yardage ranging from 4,574 to 6,730 yards. Also, there are 3 additional “Combo” yardages listed on the scorecard, bringing a total of nine different yardage options.

The course will test the skills of even the most seasoned professional golfer, and at the same time provide high handicappers and those that are new to the game the opportunity to enjoy all of the pleasures the game of golf has to offer.

In 2018 a major golf course renovation was completed by Golf Course Architect Ron Garl.  During the golf course renovation, a new chipping area, bunker, practice green and putting green were all enlarged. The tee area on the aqua driving range was also expanded and new synthetic turf was installed along with a paver border in the back of the range to improve the aesthetics.  Greens and bunkers were reconstructed to USGA specifications; all greens were regrassed with TifEagle Bermuda and the fairways regrassed with Celebration Bermuda. A new state of the art irrigation and pumping system was also installed.

As for changes to the course, Holes # 11, 15 and 17 were made a lot more playable; especially where water was present in front of the green. These areas were filled in and flattened so golfers of all levels can run the ball onto these greens making their round more enjoyable. Also, for the high handicappers, several greens were enlarged, while the skilled player will find that several bunkers have been angled, requiring more thought when approaching the green. On Holes #1, 4, 10, 17 and 18 rolling Florida natural sand areas were added creating a more tropical look. Lastly, the front shelf of the two-tiered 18th green was lowered two feet, creating a split-level green with a “Sunday” pin on the upper level on the back right.

Regardless of your talent level, if you’re a golfer who appreciates a day on the course, you’ll be rewarded with all that Worthington has to offer. The course is meticulously maintained, and the grounds are well manicured, giving Worthington a look and feel that will rival any private country club in South Florida. What’s more, they offer the kind of service you’d expect from a private country club. Worthington is truly a first-class operation in Southwest Florida.

With the improvements Garl made to the practice facilities, it is one of the area’s best. The full-length aqua range will let you hit every club in your bag. There’s also a chipping green with bunker and large practice putting green. In case you’re a beginner looking to take the game up or your game could use a tune-up, Worthington’s staff of PGA Professionals are at your service. Their pro shop is also stocked with tons of logoed apparel, equipment and accessories to keep your wardrobe and golf bag up to date.

Tennis is another popular sport at Worthington Country Club. Three of their five Har-Tru Clay courts are illuminated for night play and the windscreens around the courts allow for play in less than favorable conditions. Worthington’s tennis program includes activities for all levels of players from beginners to advanced players and includes clinics, team practices, doubles leagues and daily round robins. There’s also a ball machine available to practice by yourself. If it has been a while since you’ve played or you’re new to the game, stop by the Tennis Center and find out the best way to get involved.

Bocce is big at Worthington County Club and their bocce facilities include three bocce courts, two of which have canopies on both ends and are lit for approved night play. The bocce area has men’s and ladies restrooms, a water cooler, bleachers, chairs, benches, and tables. Parking is available for golf carts and vehicles.

Worthington has a large Activity Center complete with state-of-the-art fitness equipment, an exercise room, locker areas, and plenty of options for fitness classes and personal training. Worthington Country Club invites its Members to embark on a personal journey of fitness and enjoy a lifestyle change that will improve one’s quality of life. Worthington has partnered with Fit Forever to provide fitness classes, personal training, and spa services at Worthington.

After your workout, relax by Worthington’s resort-style swimming pool and enjoy the beautiful Florida weather. The Cabana offers a casual dining experience like no other, with a bar, screened-in outdoor dining area and a fireplace for those chilly Florida winter evenings.

Each year, Worthington Country Club hosts its fair share of social events including The Snowflake Ball, New Year’s Eve Gala, Valentines Dinner Dance, Las Vegas Style Comedy and Magic Shows as well as their daily a la carte dining. It’s a great way to renew acquaintances with old friends and strike up some new conversations. You never know who you’ll see there. It’s also a popular place to hold a wedding, business meeting or special event. Their professional staff of event coordinators will help you plan an event that fits into your budget and makes all of your wishes and dreams come true. Revo – Some Great Choices for Golf in 2019

0

Revo continues to make huge strides in the products they offer golfers. For those not familiar with the company, Revo has its roots firmly planted in space! While working on a project for NASA in 1985, Optical Engineer Dr. Mitch Ruda decided to take the coatings that protect satellites and use it to shield our eyes from the sun? Two years later, Chicago Bears quarterback Jim McMahon was often seen sporting his Revos and ever since it’s been “game on!” Sports stars and celebrities such as Bono, Danica Patrick and Tom Cruise have all become fans.

Revo lenses harness NASA-based technology to create a lens that protects, enhances, and improves the way you see the world. They achieve this by using an exclusive, lightweight polycarbonate material for the base, and then apply a series of unique coatings to the front and back of the lens to maximize protection and performance. Every Revo lens protects from harmful bandwidths of light, including blue light, which reduces the risk of eye strain and health issues. Revo’s lenses are optimized for the full light spectrum, making colors look more vivid for an enhanced visual experience. This makes them digital device-friendly by reducing glare and enhancing the clarity of digital screens.

A few years ago, Revo developed a “golf specific” lens, which excels at separating colors down to minute levels of contrast and can help you identify the subtle break of a green. The new Descend N sunglasses are one of several models designed with golfers in mind. Its rimless design offers a wider field of vision and the lightweight frame makes them a breeze to wear the entire round. They feature a more curved profile, temple to temple and the MotionFit design ensures a secure fit without any pinching or slipping. In addition to Golf, Revo’s high-contrast polarized Serilium+ lenses are available in several other color options: Blue Water, Graphite, Terra, Green Water, or Champagne and Black, Crystal, Crystal Brown, or Blush frame colors. The Descend N sunglasses retail for $179.

The Zinger Sunglasses not only protect your eyes while on the course, they let you make a fashion statement as well. These lightweight, polarized sunglasses are flattering on all face shapes and a keyhole bridge and non-slip nose pads keep the fit comfortable. Revo’s 6-base lens technology enhances clarity and prevents glare and their Light Management System filters harmful UV, HEV, and blue light. Zinger is available in several frame colors: Matte Black Scratch, Matte Tortoise, Matte Crystal, and Crystal Sand and three lens options: Blue Water, Graphite and Champagne. Retail price is $199.

Another pair of Revos worthy of your consideration for golf are the Baseliner sunglasses. Although they don’t offer a Golf lens, Revo’s Baseliner sunglasses have become my “go to” pair of shades for golf. They offer great coverage from the sun and the modern wrap style is designed to be ultra-lightweight and comfortable. Throw in Revo’s superior polarized lenses and elastomeric non-slip nose pads, and you’re good to go for at least 18 holes. Revo’s Light Management System filters out harmful UV, HEV, and blue light. The Baseliners are available in either a Crystal Gray or Matte Black frame with Blue Water, Green Water, or Graphite colored lenses. These glasses look and feel so good, you can have them on all day and forget you’re wearing them. Retail price is $199.

As Revo continues to gain traction in the ever crowded golf eyewear industry, I’m sure we’ll start to see more of the popular frames fitted with Golf lenses. Not that there’s anything wrong with what they currently offer. For more information or to see the entire collection visit www.revo.com.

Bobby Jones Spring 2019 Collection – Style and Sophistication All the Way

0

The Loop: Twice the Fun!

0

My first encounter with a Tom Doak design was at Black Forest up in Gaylord, Michigan. My recollection was that he liked to bury elephants in the green. The greens had some of the wildest breaks and undulations I had ever seen. They made some of Jack Nicklaus’ designs seem tame.

My second encounter was at Streamsong, where Doak and his Renaissance Golf team of architects created what many believe is one of Florida’s finest courses, Streamsong Blue. The greens, while they didn’t seem to have a much rise and fall as I remember from Black Forest, were extremely fast, which is not entirely Doak’s fault.

My lack of enthusiasm for Tom Doak-designed golf courses changed after I finished playing the first round of his latest creation – the reversible Loop Course at Forest Dunes Golf Club in Rosscommon Michigan. This is one – make that two – incredible golf courses!

Doak had been toying with the idea of creating a reversible course for more than 30 years. The idea comes from The Old Course at St. Andrews, which was played both was during the 19th century. Every now and then you’ll read about an event at The Old Course where it is played backwards.

Doak’s problem was find a piece of land where he could make his dream a reality. Tom now lives in Northern Michigan and knows the area quite well. He felt that the land around the Forest Dunes Golf Club in Roscommon, MI had most of the elements he was looking for. To make a long story short, it just so happened that the course had come under new ownership and there was an interest in adding a second course. Several months later a deal was struck and Doak and his Renaissance team got to work. Very little earth was moved in creating The Loop. Doak did a great job of using the subtilties in the natural topography of the land to shape the holes and arrange them in a clockwise/counterclockwise direction.

The finished product is quite an accomplishment. Eighteen greens that are approach from different directions on different days, creating 36 unique golf holes. A green that plays as a par 3 on Monday could be a par 5 on Tuesday. Tee boxes are a throwback to the old days and are marked with a single small flag. Tee up on either side; there are no defined boundaries. There’s a good reason for this:  what may be a tee box on Monday will be part of the fairway on Tuesday. There are three sets of tees on every hole, marked with Black, White and Red markers. They look like little flags and bear The Loop’s Infinity logo.

The Loop is as close to Scotland as you can get without using a passport and is  reminiscent of some of the great courses in the home of golf. It’s a walking only course, no motorized carts are allowed on the course. Guests may carry their own bag or use a push cart. A third option is to take a caddie. If you’re out to shoot your best score or take money from your buddies, this is a wise move, as their knowledge of the golf course and green complexes may prove a valuable resource.

The main reason this course is walking only is because of the special grasses that Doak used throughout the course. According to some of the maintenance people I spoke with, the fescue grass used cannot withstand the wear and tear of motorized golf carts. As you make your way around, you’ll see that even walkers and pull carts have literally left their mark on the course.

The Red Course plays counterclockwise around The Loop. Your round starts to the right of the 18th green and plays to the red flag in the distance. You play to the red flags on the front nine and the white flags on the back. If all else fails and you lose your way, just keep to the right.

The routing on the Red Course is more traditional; starting you out with holes that lift your spirits and give you hope, only to bring you back to reality on the last few holes. One of the more memorable scoring holes is the short par 4 12th, which can produce a 6 or 7 as easily as a 3 or 4. At only 312 yards from the back tees, many long hitters will be tempted to go for the green off the tee. Although it plays downhill, it’s a long carry over the front bunker and shooting it up the gap on the left can make for a tricky up and down. Long fescue grasses and the odd tree await anything hit to the right.

The Black Course plays clockwise around the property. The round starts left of the 18th green and plays to the white flag in the distance. With this routing, you play to white flags on the front nine, and the red flags on the back, just like you were playing The Old Course at St. Andrews. If you ever get to the point where you’re not sure of which way to go, just keep to the left!

The Black Course starts out tough and finishes somewhat easier than the Red. Coincidently, Number 12 on the Black Course is also a short par 4 and perhaps the most memorable on the entire course – either way. Although you’ll be tempted to thump the ball off the tee between the bunkers on the left, you may want to consider laying up short of the bunker. Anything over the bunker but not far enough left will funnel down the slope and bring the deep bunker on the right side in to play. Too far right off the tee and one of The Loop’s rare trees may hinder your approach shot.

Last Word: The Loop takes golfers back to the simple origins of golf. Hazards typically found in the US are limited; there is no water on the course and only a few man-made bunkers. And, although the course is situated within a state forest, very few trees come into play. There is no first or second cut of rough; if you don’t see your ball when you get up to it, you’re in trouble. That said, there is still an unbelievable amount of trouble in the form of natural wastelands formed over a long period of time and areas of native fescue grasses.

Playing the course just once each way is not nearly enough to develop any kind of feel or to really distinguish one hole from another. In looking back at my rounds on the Red and Black Courses and trying to recreate the rounds, I found that it was necessary to refer to the yardage book, and sometimes that wasn’t enough.

The fairways on The Loop are wide open, especially off the tee, giving you the opportunity to just swing away and hit it as far as you can. This can be both good and bad because The Loop has some of the most intriguing green complexes you will ever encounter. Often there a huge advantage to approaching the green from one side of the fairway and the green complexes require you to hit a variety of shots and be creative if you want to get your ball close to the hole. It really does require a lot of mental acuity to get around the course successfully.

What ended up being the downfall of The Old Course being a reversible course was that memorable holes, such as the Road Hole (No. 17) and the par-3 11th just weren’t the same when played in the opposite direction. Eventually, people only showed up to play it when it played in a particular direction. The Loop is less than two years old so it’s a little early to tell if it will have the same fate.
