Bunker Hill Golf Course: A Century of Tradition and a New Chapter in Medina, Ohio

There’s something different about a golf course that’s been in the same family for generations, and you feel it the moment you pull into Bunker Hill Golf Course in Medina, Ohio. It doesn’t have the manicured, corporate polish of a country club chasing a brand image. What it has instead is the kind of lived-in character that only comes from decades of the same people caring for the same ground. Next year marks the course’s 100th anniversary, and after spending a day playing the property and hearing its story from co-owners Stephen Ross and Arnold Ingraham, and General Manager Chad Gibson, I can tell you that century of history isn’t just a number on a plaque. It’s baked into every hole, every building, and honestly, every conversation you’ll have with the staff.

The land itself has roots that go back even further than the golf course does. It was originally known as Bunker Hill Farm, a name given by an early settler in honor of the historic Bunker Hill in Charlestown, Massachusetts, after a family member fought in the actual Battle of Bunker Hill back in 1775. The farm carried that name for generations before it became a golf course in 1927, which means the club’s 100th anniversary next year is really the continuation of a story that started with a Revolutionary War connection nearly two and a half centuries ago. Not many public golf courses in America can say that.

The family stewardship that’s defined Bunker Hill for most of its existence began in 1939, when Berneta and Roger Ingraham purchased the course. Their younger son, Arnold, took over in 1980 and quietly modernized the place without stripping away its character, adding a picnic pavilion for outings, building out full cart paths and irrigation across the course, and constructing a seven-acre lake to keep that irrigation system running properly. Arnold also built the weekday evening leagues that have become one of the club’s signature offerings, the kind of grassroots community golf that keeps a course relevant decade after decade. Stephen Ross joined as co-owner in 2020, and today the course is in the best shape it’s ever been in. What struck me most is a detail that has nothing to do with turf conditions: the Ingrahams still live in the large white house near the clubhouse, a quiet, everyday reminder that this isn’t a corporate-owned operation trying to manufacture a sense of heritage. The heritage is right there, living on the property.

That family-first mentality carries over into how the course itself has evolved. Several years ago, Bunker Hill went through a reconfiguration, and as part of it, the Gold and White tees were altered specifically to make the course more playable for golfers of all abilities. You can see the result most clearly on the 6th hole, the course’s number one handicap hole and a genuine test from any set of markers. It’s basically a 90-degree dogleg left, and from the back tees, playing 443 yards, it takes everything you’ve got just to reach the corner of the dogleg before you can even think about the green. From the White tees, at 342 yards, the hole plays completely differently: a long iron over the corner sets up a short pitch shot onto the green, which is exactly the kind of adjustment that makes a hole feel fair rather than punishing depending on which tees you’re playing. It’s a smart piece of design work, and a good example of what that tee reconfiguration was meant to accomplish.

My favorite hole on the course, without much hesitation, was the 8th. It’s a 189-yard par 3 that plays over a deep valley, with a large tree growing up from the valley floor guarding the right side of the green. There’s no bailout here. It’s all carry, so you either clear the valley and find the green, or you’re staring down a long, uphill approach shot that plays at least two clubs longer than whatever your GPS is telling you. I learned that lesson the hard way, and I’d happily learn it again given the chance, because it’s one of those holes that photographs beautifully and plays even better. It’s the kind of one-shotter you’ll find yourself describing to your foursome back home, trying and failing to fully capture how intimidating that tee shot looks standing over the ball.

From the back tees, Bunker Hill plays 6,806 yards to a par of 72, with a course rating of 73.5 and a slope of 135, numbers that reflect just how much teeth this course has despite its public, community-golf roots. The Hybrid Tees bring that number down to 5,790 yards for players who want a more manageable walk without sacrificing the character of the layout.

Golf aside, Bunker Hill has built a real reputation as a gathering place, and it shows in how often the club hosts outings, leagues, and weddings throughout the year. The Bunker Hill Event Center offers five distinct spaces, ranging from a casual pavilion to a formal banquet hall, all of it overlooking the rolling fairways of the golf course. The team handles full-service catering and event planning, and the venue regularly hosts weddings, rehearsal dinners, showers, reunions, graduations, and even fall clambakes, on top of the corporate outings and charity fundraisers that keep the calendar full most of the year. It’s the kind of versatile setup that lets a course built in 1927 stay genuinely busy a century later, not as a museum piece, but as a working part of the community. General Manager Chad Gibson would not have it any other way!

That’s really the story of Bunker Hill in a nutshell. It’s a golf course with a Revolutionary War name, a family that has owned and lived on the property for over 80 years, tee boxes that were thoughtfully reworked to welcome every level of golfer, and a couple of holes, especially that brutal dogleg on six and the all-carry par 3 on eight, that you won’t forget after one round. As it heads into its 100th year, Bunker Hill remains exactly what it’s always been: a well-run, family-rooted course that Medina County golfers are lucky to call their own.
