Comanche Trace – Go on a Permanent Vacation!

Thinking about moving or relocating to Texas? Whether your joy comes from hiking, biking, fishing, racquet sports, or golf, a community in the Texas Hill Country deserves your consideration.

Nestled in the heart of the Texas Hill Country, Comanche Trace is located just minutes from the thriving town of Kerrville. The airports in San Antonio and Austin are an hour and two hours away, respectively. Kerrville has small-town charm with an abundance of amenities, including award-winning health care, upscale shopping, a vibrant cultural arts center, and a variety of outdoor activities.

Comanche Trace is a 1,300-acre master-planned community with homesites up to 1.5 acres and prices that range from the $500s to over $2 M. The community has been recognized as one of the “50 Best Master Planned Communities in the U.S.” and one of “America’s Top 100 Golf Communities” multiple times.

Comanche Trace is owned and operated by Legacy Golf Properties, who develop, operates, and consults with clubs nationwide. Comanche Trace allowed Legacy Golf Properties to expand their portfolio to include residential resort communities in addition to private clubs. The company has built a reputation for providing impeccable playing conditions, along with service and amenities that are second to none. Since taking over the property, residents have seen a difference in the day-to-day management of the club and are excited about Legacy’s plans for the future. They also own Cimarron Hills Golf & Country Club in Georgetown, TX.

You’d be hard-pressed to find a community that offers its residents more than Comanche Trace.  Their new 5,000 sq. ft fitness center is nothing short of spectacular. With Freemotion cardio and strength-training equipment, free weights, and instructor-led fitness classes in the Club’s new Movement studio, you can work out to your heart’s content!

For racquet enthusiasts, Comanche Trace’s pickleball and tennis courts allow seasoned players and beginners to take part in year-round fun and get some exercise at the same time. With four lit pickleball courts, you can play well into the night.

One amenity not often found within the confines of a golf community is fishing, and I’m not talking about pulling golf balls out of the water! Lake Comanche is stocked with bass, catfish, and brim, and as long as you release them back into the water, you won’t need a fishing license. The lake is over 4 acres, so you can roam the shoreline until you find that perfect spot.

The adjacent Guadalupe River Park is a great place to gather with friends and family for a picnic, fossil hunting, or quiet walks along the river. There’s a small pavilion with a fireplace, fire pit, and stairs down to the river, and you can book the area as an event setting with reservations.

For those who enjoy hiking, biking, or just a leisurely stroll, there are over 4 miles of crushed granite trails with various terrain.

The Club offers Members two distinctly different dining venues. The Taphouse, which overlooks the 15-acre practice facility, serves delicious wood-fired pizzas and après-round drinks. The Pinnacle Grill is in the main clubhouse, and in addition to fabulous cuisine, it offers some of the best views in the area. The food is second to none, with such imaginative appetizers as Wagyu Stuffed Jalapenos and Prime Rib Eggrolls. Entrees include Airline Chicken and Wagyu steaks, locally sourced from Grateful Ranch.

For most residents, the main attraction is the stunning 27 holes of championship golf. The course is well-known in this part of the country and regularly hosts qualifying events for the USGA, including the U.S. Open, numerous qualifiers for the PGA TOUR’s Valero Texas Open, as well as collegiate and junior championships in conjunction with the TGA.

The Club at Comanche Trace consists of three 9-hole layouts aptly named The Valley, The Hills, and The Creeks nines. The Valley and The Hills form the original 18-hole layout and were designed by Tom Kite, Roy  Bechtol, and Randy Russell, and opened for play in 2000.

The Valley nine starts at the highest point of the property and works its way down. The tee boxes and fairways are always in great shape, and the Bentgrass greens are seamlessly woven into the natural terrain. There are several live oak trees, like Old Gnarly on the 5th hole, that are over 100 years old. The layout takes you toward the front of the community, then makes a hairpin turn and heads back uphill. The 9th hole is truly memorable and may be the most challenging of any on the entire layout. It plays 403 yards from the White Tees, uphill with some fantastic bunkering. Don’t be afraid to play your approach shot right of the green to avoid the bunkers on the left side; many shots hit over there often bounce down onto the green! And remember, it’s uphill and most likely into the wind, so be sure to hit enough club!

The Hills was the back nine of the original eighteen. It starts at another high point on the course and then follows the natural contours of the Hill Country. Kite and his team did a wonderful job of following the natural terrain to create this nine-hole course. Most greens have a soft yet subtle undulation that offers the chance to make every putt. At 305 yards from the White Tees, the 6th hole is short, but don’t let the length fool you. Just about every club imaginable has been hit off these tees; it’s all about keeping your tee shot in play and having a clear shot into the green. The fairway is quite generous; however, anything left of center will leave a semi-blind shot into the green. Opt for the right side, and you’ll need to contend with the large fairway bunker. A good drive that finds the fairway will leave nothing more than a short pitch shot and a good chance at birdie.

The Creeks Nine was designed by the father and son team of Jay and Carter Morrish and opened in 2008. The Creeks is the most challenging of the three, and many Members blame that on the creek that meanders in and out of the fairways on holes one to five. The fairways are a little wider, and the unique bunkering and Bentgrass greens will create a variety of shots from the fairway. The Director of Golf gave me a bit of friendly advice for the 4th hole. He said shoot the distance from the tee box to the green tree on the right, take 10 yards off, and aim left, which I executed to perfection! He was warning me about the creek that needs to be crossed twice on the way to the green. It’s far and away the most interesting hole on the Creeks nine.

Comanche Trace has one of the best practice facilities in the area. At one end of the range, there’s a complete short-game area with fairway and greenside bunkers, a dedicated pitching area, and a putting green. There’s a full-length driving range where you can hit every club in your bag. You’ll probably need them all on the course!

If you’re a golfer who likes a challenge and enjoys playing golf year-round, consider membership at Comanche Trace. The Club strives to provide its Members with resort-style amenities and create a vacation-like atmosphere. You’ll have ample opportunity to meet like-minded individuals and develop deep, meaningful relationships. Comanche Trace recently released several new .5 – 1-acre home sites on and off the golf course. Start with a Stay-and-Play package, something rare for a private club. You can spend two (or more) days in a luxury villa, play golf, use the practice facility, fitness center, and pickleball courts, and dine at the Pinnacle Grill. You’ll be a Member for a Stay!

As a member, you’ll receive reciprocal club privileges at Legacy’s other property, Cimarron Hills, in Georgetown, about 2 hours away.

Visit the beautiful Texas Hill Country this November 7-9th and 14-16th for the Comanche Trace Tour of Homes, where Preferred Builders will showcase their craftsmanship, unique architectural styles, and stunning designs. From Garden Homes to Single-Family and Estate Homes—including several available spec homes—you’ll have the opportunity to tour a wide variety of options. It’s also the perfect chance to meet the builders if you’re looking to create your Hill Country dream home.
