Hardin County, Tennessee: Three Courses, One Lake, and a Steak Dinner Worth a Detour

There’s a particular kind of quiet that settles over Pickwick Lake in the late afternoon, when the sun starts dropping behind the pines and the water goes the color of hammered pewter. I noticed it the moment I pulled into the parking lot at the Lodge at Pickwick Landing, golf clubs rattling in the trunk, and I knew right away this trip was going to be one of those rare ones where the destination is just as good as the golf. Hardin County, tucked into the southwest corner of Tennessee where the state leans up against Mississippi and Alabama, isn’t a place that shows up on many golf bucket lists. It should.

I made the Lodge my base camp for three days of golf, and it turned out to be exactly the right call. The Lodge at Pickwick Landing sits inside the state park itself, 119 newly renovated rooms plus five suites, most with private balconies (first-floor rooms get patios instead) that look straight out over Pickwick Lake. There’s nothing quite like standing on that balcony after a round in the Tennessee humidity, cold drink in hand, watching the boats come in off the water. The property also has a full-service marina, an indoor and outdoor pool, and plenty of common-area seating with lake views — the kind of setup that makes a multi-day golf trip feel like a genuine getaway rather than a logistics project.

Every morning of my stay, I wandered down to the Restaurant at Pickwick Landing for the complimentary continental breakfast, included for lodge and cabin guests daily from 7 to 10 a.m. It’s simple, unfussy fuel — exactly what you want before eighteen holes, no need to hunt down breakfast off-property before an early tee time. Dinner is where the restaurant really earns its keep, though. The space underwent a full renovation in 2020 and now has a bright, glass-walled dining room and lounge overlooking the lake and dam, and the kitchen puts out a nightly steak special that’s become something of a local institution — the kind of thing regulars ask about before they’ve even sat down. Between that and dishes like shrimp and grits and hand-cut steaks off the regular menu, I never once considered driving out of the park for dinner.

Golf-wise, I started right on property, at Pickwick Landing State Park Golf Course. This is a classic state park track, the kind of course that reminds you golf doesn’t have to be complicated to be genuinely fun. From the back tees it plays 6,483 yards to a par of 72, with a course rating of 71.1 and a slope of 123 — numbers that suggest a layout with some teeth, and it delivers. The course has picked up real recognition for a public track, landing at No. 2 on Golf Advisor’s Best Public Golf Courses in Tennessee list in both 2023 and 2024. Playing a course that good without ever leaving your hotel property is a rare luxury.

On day two, I made the short drive to Shiloh Falls Golf Club in nearby Counce. Shiloh Falls plays 6,550 yards from the tips to a par of 72, with a course rating of 73.6 and a slope of 131 — the most demanding number on the scorecard of any course I played in Hardin County, and you feel every bit of it. The course was laid out by Jerry Pate and Fred Couples back in 1993, and it shows in the design: bold, dramatic, unafraid of elevation change. Case in point, the 15th hole, which has a story worth knowing. It originally played as a dramatic par 3 with roughly a 100-foot drop from tee to green, so severe that the club installed an elevator just to get golfers and their gear down and back up. A land dispute eventually forced the hole to be reconfigured, and today’s 15th is a different animal entirely: a short, 117-yard par 3 from the back tees, playing slightly downhill to a green backed by a brick retaining wall that separates the course from the homes just beyond it. It’s a much friendlier hole than the one it replaced, but knowing what used to be there adds a little extra texture as you stand on the tee. The new ownership has also put real money into the clubhouse, which has been completely remodeled and now feels every bit as sharp as the course itself — don’t rush off after your round, because the restaurant there is not to be missed.

Day three was Shiloh Golf Course in Adamsville, a semi-private layout with a different personality — tighter, more tree-lined, a course that rewards accuracy over power. From the back tees it plays 6,352 yards to a par of 71, with a course rating of 70.5 and a slope of 119, numbers a notch gentler than its Counce cousin but no less enjoyable. The 7th hole is a good example of what makes this course tick: a par 4 playing 390 yards from the blue tees, bending slightly left with a wall of trees crowding the entire left side of the fairway, daring you to bail out right instead. Just when you think you’ve got the tee shot figured out, a winding creek crosses the fairway roughly 100 yards short of the green, forcing a real decision on the approach. It’s the kind of hole that punishes a lazy swing far more than a short one.

Three rounds, three very different flavors of golf, all within a short drive of each other and within easy reach of the Battle of Shiloh’s hallowed ground if you want a history detour between tee times. That’s the real case for Hardin County: it packs a genuinely varied golf experience into a compact, uncrowded corner of the state, from one comfortable home base on the water. I went in expecting a solid few rounds and came away already planning my next trip back, mostly so I can get another crack at that nightly steak special.
