In case you have been living in a cave somewhere high in the Andes Mountains, odds are you are familiar with the name Maui Jim when a conversation about which company makes the best sunglasses comes up. Originally headquartered in Lahaina, HI, Maui Jim sunglasses were created on the hotel pool decks of Maui, Hawaii in 1980. Maui Jim sunglasses were quickly recognized as a leader in the industry and the brand was introduced in the mainland states. Maui Jim continued to grow and shortly after buying RLI Vision in 1996, the corporate headquarters were relocated to the RLI Vision compound in Peoria, IL.
Maui Jim became a leading brand in the action sports and optical markets. The company saw the need to create a lens that could handle the intensity of the island sun, the reflective glare from the water and also keep out harmful UV rays. Now, every pair of Maui Jim sunglasses feature patented PolarizedPlus®2 lens technology for brilliant color so every detail is crisper and cleaner; almost all lines are marketed with a sporty, oceanic theme. Maui Jim also offers prescription lenses for their designs, including bifocal lenses.
I purchased my first pair of Maui Jims about 10 years ago and have been a huge fan ever since; between my wife and I, we have 8 or 9 pair. When I spoke with the folks at the Maui Jim booth at the PGA Show in Orlando, FL and was asked if I would like to review a pair recommended for golf, I didn’t hesitate.
Over the past six months I have worn several pair of Maui Jims during my weekly rounds of golf; the Longboard, Ho’Okipa, Breakwall and the new MauiPure Mala. All four provide excellent protection against harmful UV rays and enhance the colors of the golf course. The greens look greener and the ball looks whiter through a pair of Maui Jims.
When playing in the humidity of Florida, I prefer a pair of sunglasses that are rimless and don’t gather pool perspiration. Although the MauiPure Mala glasses are my favorites, getting them on and off your face to wipe away sweat requires two hands and this is not easy to do when driving a golf cart. For this reason, I find that the Ho’Okipa model provides the best solution to for both situations. The Longboards definitely provide the most coverage and if you are simply out to look good, the Breakwalls are an excellent choice however any pair of Maui Jims will always make me look better.
The idea behind a longboard: to catch more waves. The idea behind our Longboard wrap: to catch more rays without glare and harmful UV. These glasses have a classic surf style.
Progressive, competitive and comfortable. You’re a blur of activity. But these cutting-edge, sporty frames offer clear, unobstructed views of your world in motion.
On the course or on the shore, Breakwall tames UV and wind to protect your vision beautifully. Breakwalls are rimless and feather-light for an unfettered view, all day long.
The perfect lens for an everyday, active lifestyle, MauiPure is the lightest weight choice for those long days in the sun. Scratch and impact resistant, MauiPure offers the crispest optics next to glass.
Inspired by the meaning of the word Keanu (meaning “cool breeze over the mountains),” these shades deliver unparalleled protection of PolarizedPlus2® lens technology, which keeps you cool and glare free no matter what the day has in store.
