Oldham County, Kentucky – More Golf Than You Ever Imagined

There’s a moment, somewhere along the rolling bluegrass corridor of I-71 north of Louisville, when you realize Oldham County, Kentucky, has been quietly holding out on you. Horse farms scroll past the windows, the terrain rises and folds like a golf course architect’s rough draft, and by the time you pull off the interstate, you’ve already begun to understand why this compact county, just 20 minutes from downtown Louisville, packs four legitimate golf experiences into a stretch of land better known for thoroughbreds and bourbon. I came in for two nights with four rounds on the books and left with a full notebook and a shorter list of excuses for iron play.

The Holiday Inn Express & Suites in LaGrange sits directly off I-71, which puts it within easy reach of every course and attraction on this itinerary. The 86 rooms are clean and well-appointed with refrigerators, microwaves, coffee makers, and the blackout curtains that golfers requesting early tee times genuinely appreciate, as well as an indoor pool, fitness center, and free Wi-Fi. The real advantage, though, is the complimentary Express Start hot breakfast, a proper sit-down fuel-up on Day One, and a grab-and-go on Day Two when the tee sheet doesn’t care about your appetite. Either way, you’re not paying for it.

Day One

The opening round belongs to Sleepy Hollow Golf Course in Prospect, and it’s a perfect way to ease into the trip. Designed by Harold England and opened in 1968, this nine-hole semi-private course plays to 3,206 yards at par 36 from the back tees. Tree-lined fairways roll across genuine Kentucky farmland, horses visible from multiple holes, water in play on several, and a pace that gives you room to breathe after a long drive in. It’s not trying to be dramatic. It’s trying to be fun, and it succeeds. Ask anyone who’s played here what they remember best about the course, and the answer gravitates towards the staff and how warm and friendly they are. I guess it’s a family tradition at this family-owned business!

Dinner lands at Madeline’s Nibbles & Wine in historic downtown LaGrange, where owners Hannah Stone and Chef Carlos Bolanos-Najera have built something quietly excellent on North First Avenue. The menu is French-Italian in spirit: small plates, shareable portions, a well-chosen wine list, and a back patio that’s one of the better places to end an evening in this part of Kentucky.

Day Two

After a grab-and-go breakfast, the morning belongs to Nevel Meade Golf Club in Prospect, and it earns every minute of the drive. Designed by Steven R. Smyers, Nevel Meade is one of the most distinctive layouts in the state, a genuine links-inspired course perched atop a high plateau above a bend of Harrods Creek. The entire course is carpeted in Bentgrass, and trees will be the least of your worries. Just be wary of the prevailing winds across the plateau, which seem to figure into every round.

The signature 14th tee sits at one of the highest points on the property, where the woods give way to cliffs dropping some 100 feet to Harrods Creek below, and is always a topic of conversation. The par-4 17th, at 474 yards, is the number-one handicap hole and earns it. Deep sand bunkering, large greens, and heather-style rough keep the Scottish comparisons honest throughout. Multiple tee options make it playable for all levels; the course knowledge required to score well makes it compelling for every level.

The golf shop at Nevel Meade deserves its own mention. Unlike most courses that offer a few logo hats and a rack of polos, Nevel Meade is as close to a big-box golf retailer as you’ll find at a daily-fee course, with a wide assortment of apparel and footwear, professional club fittings, and equipment at prices that compete with online retailers.

From Nevel Meade, a short drive brings you to Eagle Creek Golf Course in LaGrange for the afternoon round and lunch first at Seasoned Pub & Grill in the modern Eagle Creek clubhouse. Seasoned is a family-owned sports pub with a menu wide enough to satisfy any post-round appetite: handmade New York-style strombolis, burgers, fried fish, beer cheese, pretzels, cold draft beer, and enough screens to catch whatever game is on. It’s open to the public seven days a week and priced for the everyday golfer.

Eagle Creek itself opened in 1966 and is owned by the City of LaGrange. Bermuda fairways, Bentgrass greens, and mature woods frame most holes and make it feel worlds away from the open plateau at Nevel Meade. The 12th, a 391-yard par-4, is the toughest hole on the card: straightaway tee shot, sand bunker protecting the right side of the green, trees left. It doesn’t look dangerous until you’re standing on the tee. Eagle Creek offers five sets of tees to accommodate all levels of expertise.

Day Two winds down with dinner at Barn8 on Hermitage Farm in Goshen, and it’s the kind of meal that justifies the whole trip. Co-founders Steve Wilson and Laura Lee Brown built the restaurant inside a converted historic horse stable on a working thoroughbred farm. The original horse stalls now have tables in them and provide an intimate dining experience. The farm-to-table menu is driven by on-site gardens and local Kentucky producers, and a Bourbon Bar & Lounge stocked with rare small-batch pours from across the Kentucky Bourbon Trail. The menu changes with the season. The cornbread skillet does not change, and you should not skip it.

Day Three

The final round of this excursion belongs to Oldham County Country Club in LaGrange, a semi-private, 18-hole course designed by Buck Blankenship in 1958 and open to the public seven days a week. A recent renovation saw the installation of the area’s best Zoysia grass fairways, which are wide and beautifully conditioned. Numerous greenside bunkers guard small, receptive greens that reward a precise short game over raw power. Mature trees frame most holes, and the rolling terrain keeps things interesting. Two holes tend to come up in conversation after the round. The 13th is the longest on the card at 523 yards, a par-5 that gives you every opportunity to make birdie and just enough trouble along the way to make you earn it. The 15th, a 389-yard par-4 and the number-one handicap hole, where Blankenship put the teeth. Miss the fairway here, and you quickly enter recovery mode. Together they form the kind of one-two punch that separates a good round from a great one, and that members have been talking about since Eisenhower was in office.

There’s plenty to do for non-golfers as well. The Yew Dell Botanical Gardens is recognized nationally, and the café serves a great Turkey Panini. 3rd Turn Oldham Gardens is the State’s largest beer garden with craft beers brewed onsite. The Crestwood Mercantile features 80 shops and vendors spaced across 3 floors with something for everyone. And so much more. Three days in Oldham County barely scratched the surface.
