While all golf travel bags may not be created equal, they all do the same thing – protect your gear from ungodly baggage handlers and cab drivers who don’t necessarily know the difference between a driver and a donut. Something else they all have in common is that when not in use, they take up a lot of space, whether it’s in a closet, the basement or the garage. Or worse yet, an already overcrowded hotel room on a buddies golf trip! Sun Mountain has found a way to alleviate the space problem. Introducing The Kube, a collapsible soft-sided travel bag with a hard plastic exterior shell. Or at least partially.
When folded up into its collapsed state, the last thing you’d expect Kube to be is a golf travel bag. In fact, if you were to guess that this odd-looking apparatus had anything to do with travel, you might think it was some sort of carry-on piece. It’s not until you undo the three clasps that hold the two hard shell ends together and unpack it, that the concept of golf travel starts to take place. By the way, those two brightly colored shell pieces do have a purpose, they protect the top and bottom of the travel bag. And those three clips that help Kube retain its small dimension, they have their own protective housing when the Kube is unfolded.
My experience is that Sun Mountain makes high-quality golf bags and travel gear and the Kube is no exception. Besides the high impact hard shell pieces, the interior is made from durable ballistic nylon that is reinforced in wear areas and can hold its own against incompetent baggage handlers. The top features a dense layer of foam padding, meaning your clubs well be well-protected and the zippers and clasps are all heavy-duty, adding to a sense of already overwhelming security.
There are also two internal pockets that are big enough to store shoes, clothes or balls and because the Kube weighs less than 7 pounds, you can cram more stuff in it and still be under the allowable weight. The internal straps will lock your bag in place so it doesn’t move around unnecessarily inside the travel bag and the 2 smooth-rolling wheels make travel a breeze.
The dimensions of the Kube go from 52″ X 14″ X 14″ when unfolded to 9″ X 13″ X 14.5″ for storage. That means it’s large enough to hold a cart bag with a 48” driver and at the same time being able to fit on a shelf in the closet. Try that with your old travel bag!
The Sun Mountain Kube comes in eight colorways. They range from black, grey, and white, to bolder options like “Inferno” (seen here) and the lime green “Rush.” Regardless of the exterior color, the interior is a dark grey.
Those colorful Kube plastic hard shells are available in eight colorways, which can come in handy when identifying your bag down in the baggage claim area.
