Number 1: Par 4, 361 yards. Woods tight on the right side; more trees on the left if you miss hit your drive. You’ll need to play down the left side of the fairway if you want to have a shot at the green. Anything on the right and you will be blocked out by trees. Water will most likely come into play on your approach shot.
Number 2: Par 4, 453 yards. The St. Pete Times has voted number two as one of the top 18 holes in the Tampa Bay area; this dogleg right is a monster. You’ll need to hit a big drive to make the dogleg; from there you will be faced with an extremely long approach shot to a small, elevated green that slopes violently from back to front and is protected on both sides by sand. A par here is an accomplishment!
Number 5: Par 5, 475 yards. Off the tee you will need to favor the left side of the fairway to at least partially take the large tree on the right side out of play. From there, you can hit a long iron or hybrid and leave yourself around 100 yards to a fairly flat green. This is a pretty and fair hole.
Number 12: Par 3, 148 yards. This beautiful par three plays about 150 yards over water to one of the largest greens on the course. The green slopes back to front with some subtle undulations. It’s not the longest hole by any means but a par here is something to be proud of.
Number 18: Par 4, 470 yards. If number 2 was a monster, this one is its daddy! It plays 470 yards from the back tees with out of bounds on the right side and more OB on the left off the tee. The green is fairly flat and quite putt able. Take a par and head for the bar!
Final Word: Don’t let the short yardage from the back tees fool you; look at the slope rating. A 6500 yard course with a slope rating of 137 is a rarity in these parts. Two holes in particular; number 2 and number 18 can really damage the scorecard. Take these two holes out of the equation and the course is very manageable. Number 17 is a reachable par 5 with a good drive, although there is a lot of sand on this hole. The plush new greens are small and can be read fairly easily.
If you have the opportunity, this is a must-play course in the Tampa area. They are currently running some membership specials, which make it very affordable, even with the smallest of budgets. Tee times are available to this Semi – Private Gem of a golf course.
